Ah, ok. I never use gloss papers, so this wouldn't be of any use to me.
I'll just wait til next month to see what the 2200 offers. They are
advertising it now in all the magazines, so I'm sure it will be
available this summer.

I hear late July. List is supposedly $699 but has anyone have any
idea of a "street" price yet?

The Epson store and B&H both have them listed at $699, I think that
is the street price, at least to start...

Epson wouldn't tell me, said I had to wait for release date. Cost of
each cart is an issue too. I know that the 7600 pro version uses 110ml
carts that cost about $70 each...x7<groan>. The street price IS
$700...that is if you can find a waiting list for one<g>.

$490 dollars for an ink change? I'd never pay that, even for 4 ounces of
ink. So unless the printer can actually be fitted with a CIS system, and
third party inks used, I'll just get another 1280.

RE: [Digital BW] Epson 2200 (Was: You want deep black?)

2002-06-28 by Lloyd O'Daniel

Jim,

The Epson Store is listing 2200 carts at $10.76 each with free shipping.
Presumably, discounters will be less than that once the initial feeding
frenzy subsides. I actually expected these carts to be more than that. I
found some ink consumption data on the UK site based on printing an
actual photograph. I haven't seen the photo, so I don't know how typical
it is. The printer had a wide variation in consumption: Lt blk only did
74 8x10's...one of the primaries did over 400. I assume this means the
printer leans on the grey ink instead of CMY for neutrals to avoid
metamerism. Based on this data and $10.76 per cart, I calculated 8x12
ink cost at $0.64 and full-bleed 13x19 at $1.66. Not great by CIS
standards, but far better than 2000P or 12x0 using OEM, from what I've
heard and read on the lists. (I now use 1160 and 1200 which have been
CIS'd from day one, so I don't know for sure.)

Right. At least that's the "official" reason. My cynical evil twin
realizes that individual chipped carts also makes it much harder (more
expensive) to manufacture CIS units and 3rd party carts.

How about the fact that every time you swap the matte or glossy black
cartridge out EVERY cartridge in the machine goes through a purge
cycle... They say it was IMPOSSIBLE to design a printer so it purged
only the black ... YEAH... I believe that, and the orange shift has
NOTHING to do with FLAWED cyan dyes, it was all in the paper... PUHLEAZE!

Thanks for the info, it is very helpful as I was tring to get a fix on
the 2200 vs 7600 ink costs and this helps a lot. Why the Epson sales
folks wouldn't tell me anything until release and you found it in the
online Epson store is a mystery to me<g> but I'm glad you found it.

That's the theory, in that when one colour runs out you don't have to
replace any others.

In practice a set of individual tanks is so expensive compared to a
five-colour tank that IMO the economics are marginal at best.

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 2200 (Was: You want deep black?)

2002-06-28 by Bob Frost

Keith,

Calm down! Most people on this list seem to print on matte fine-art type of
papers (from what I have read). Therefore if they purchased the 2200 they
would install the matte black cartridge and would not be swapping cartridges
all the time to print on gloss paper. I tend to prefer slightly glossy
papers (such as Epson Photo Paper) for B&W and do not use matte papers for
anything. Therefore I would be happy with a photo black cartridge and would
not be swapping cartridges every 5 minutes.

There may be someone else like you, who wants to swap black cartridges all
the time, and in that case you must realise that the 2200 does not have the
long feeder tubes between ink tanks and heads that the 7600 has, and
therefore it will not use up so much ink as the 7600 does in purging the
black ink.

The fact that the 7600 uses a lot of ink if you do swap black cartridges is
not a revelation; Epson state it in the 7600 specs - if you care to read
them. I haven't seen anything from Epson that says it was 'impossible' to
design a 2200 printer that purges black separately from color inks. I
imagine that it simply takes more money than they were prepare to spend on
giving you a cheap 7-ink printer with a choice of blacks. The sort of people
who buy 7600's will probably have one for printer for B&W and another one
for color, so they won't have a problem either!

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill!

Bob Frost.

I'm not so sure about that. I originally ordered one of the new wide format
printers so I DIDN'T have to have 2 printers.

Lloyd,

When I was a choirboy (many years ago) we either went to sleep during the
sermons, read a book, or played various games. We certainly didn't listen to
the sermon!!

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 2200 (Was: You want deep black?)

2002-06-29 by culturalvisions

The 2200 could be a major step toward combining b/w and color
in one printer, but it will be at a price. I saw on one preview that
an 11X14 print is estimated to use $4.00 in ink. That is not
cheap.

I've been using a 2000P and 1160 CFS side by side for the past
year. One years worth of ink for the 2000P has cost me over
$1000. The 1160 has cost me about $200 in bottled ink and
parts. Advantage MIS. The problem is that the 1160 is often
clogging or losing vacuum. The 2000P continually delivers
without much head alignment or maintainance. For problem
free use, Epson gets my thumbs up.

Single ink cartridges have many advantages, but even the 7000
still has almost half the ink in the cartridge when it reads empty.
On my 2000P there may not be enough ink for a cleaning cycle,
but there is still enough ink to print a dozen 8X10s. I don't know
what the theory is in not letting carts get emptier. On my 2000P,
when I am using black ink only, I have to change color carts every
four black ink carts. That's color ink lost in start-up cleaning
cycles alone. Even with these inherent problems with Epson
products, I'll give individual ink carts the advantage.

That said, I don't want to be the default beta tester for Epson's
2200. I was one of the first to buy the 2000P and the
metamerism problems depressed me for months. Now, two
years later, Epson has finally improved the 2000P driver to
reduce this problem. I'll check the user comments on lists like
this before I jump on the 2200 bandwagon.

RE: [Digital BW] Epson 2200 (Was: You want deep black?)

2002-06-29 by Lloyd O'Daniel

Do you have specifics (URL, magazine, etc.) about that preview? If it is
correct, it is very different from the data Epson is publishing on their
UK website. Different enough to constitute fraud. Calculations based on
the Epson numbers suggest $1.66 for a 13x19. Considering that Epson has
no problems with other devious ink-cost scams already discussed here, I
don't have extreme faith in their numbers.

If I purchased a 2200 based on Epson's numbers and found your preview's
numbers to be correct, I'd be looking for a lawyer specializing in class
actions. Like you, I think I'll hold off and let others blaze this
trail.
