Keith,

I just use foam-core for the backing in a metal frame. The print itself is
in a Light-Impressions hinged mount board. Would foam core pose any
problems in this application?

Gatorboard costs about twice what I pay for local (probably not archival)
foam core. It's just a matter of cost and convenience.

Having had prints killed by foamcore corner mashings, I prefer
gatorboard...

Any reason not to use it?

I'd use either archival foam core or gatorboard...

Non-archival foam core MAY give off formaldehyde and other volatile vapors..

I stopped using foamcore at Berkeley after two prints got knocked from a
wall during a crit.. I had to run down the hall to the mounting room and
recrop.. UGH... Never again..

Keith,

What do you mean knocked down...did they fall from the wall and damage the
corners or ends...requiring a new smaller version to cut off the damage?

By the way...there is a new form of ATG (pressure sensitive double sided
sticky mounting) tape now that is acid free and repositionable too. Pretty
neat stuff...(little more expensive)

Just curious,

Exactly....

One of my erstwhile colleague students bumped into one with a shoulder
and another student moved one of the accordion sections of the display
wall shaking my adjoining section enough to knock a second print to the
floor..

These were 24" x 36" prints on foamcore, Traditional Silver prints made
on Luminos Silver Tone Paper. As a student they had cost me an arm and a
leg to make and now they had to be speedily recropped.. Aggghh..

Besides which, making good 24" x 36" prints from 35mm negs in a
University enlarger was no walk in the park either.. ;-)

WHEE! Gotta try some!

I was never perfect when I centered my images and hated putting any
marks on the foamcore/gatorbaord service to guide placement..

Keith...

I feel your pain (even if old) and 24x36 from a 35mm..neg...anyone done the
math on that size of enlargment (?) (xtimes?)

I think the new repositionable tape could be a solution for mere mortals
(those without vacuum presses for "hot pressed" mounted) to mount larger
prints on boards...and if you get it a little wrong...just pick it up and
try again.

Good luck,

Steadman

Hello Vinny,

I don't have the catalog with me now. Will look for it and post the info in
a day. Keep an eye on this thread subject.

Also...you may be able to find this stuff in a large art supply store that
caters to professional graphic designers. My source is a wholesale
distributor who carries dozens of types of tapes useful for photo and
framing industry.
