Jerry,

In a sense they are. The wide format 7000, 9000 and 10000 series are
targeted at photographers. Successful commercial photographers who can
reasonably get a return on the cost of these printers and associated RIP's.

What they are neglecting entirely is the (I hate this term) "prosumer
market" , i.e. advanced amateurs, nor so commercial photographers. If they
were smart they would come out with a 17" wide printer in the $1,000 to
$2,000 price range (with software) and I bet it would sell like crazy.
Something that has the robust transport quality of the big printers but on a
smaller scale. The 5000 and 5500 were a bust because they only went up to
13" wide like all the large desktop models and cost almost as much as the
7000 and 7500. Essentially they need a replacement for the 3000.

Also I suspect we will be buying 2200's in a year for use with grayscale
inks once the chips have been reverse engineered and a CIS is available.

And I'll add my guess that we will all probably be using imageprint or
someone else's RIP to drive them to take advantage of the variable droplet
technology...that's the key advantage of the 2200...with speed of the epson
driver being the main disadvantage.
