Andre,

It may be that the 8000 has a different driver/software package than the
4000.

When I use the "positive" setting for B&W negatives, the image will look
very light when inverted in Photoshop. The default algorithm Nikon uses
gives tremendous shadow separation -- probably too much. I have tried
raising the histogram middle (gamma) in the Nikon tools palette and
comparing that to doing the same thing in Photoshop, and I'm not completely
sure if there is any difference. I think I may have detected a little, but
it's not dramatic. Nonetheless, just in case there is an advantage, I do
raise the middle of the curve on the Nikon tools histogram graph in order to
compress the shadow tones.

I tried, again, comparing the "negative" setting to the "positive" setting
and found that to get the highlights in my B&W negatives I needed about -0.6
analog gain adjustment. (This varies with each negative.) However, the
shadows were blocked in the negative I just tried. Even though the blackest
black read only 96% in Photoshop, there were masses of 96% where in the
"positive" scan there was lots of detail & information.

What I look for is a 14 bit scan that has enough room off the ends of the
histogram that when I move the PS levels histogram slider in with the alt
key held down to tell me what pixels are where, I get no pixels lighting up
at 100% or 0%. I want just a hair of space to be sure nothing has been
lost.

So, with a scan like that, even if it looks too light when inverted in PS,
the PS image adjustment curves brings the values closer to what I like (and
what looks more normal), and there are enough g/s values left to do any
manipulation I want and still have a full 256 levels left by the time I get
to the printing stage. (I do now use the Nikon tools histogram to pushed up
the middle of the curve to compress the dark tones.)

(I have not yet experimented with other than the Nikon default profile in
the "preferences" section of the driver.)

I tried Paul's method of using the slide setting in the Coolscan
4000.Ended
up with totally washed out scans,a lot worse then with the normal
  settings.Any special trick Paul?

did you use the full range setting? IS there a full range setting in
that scanner?
