Scanning B&W 35MM Negatives using Nikon Super CoolScan 4000-Paul's idea.

I tried Paul's method of using the slide setting in the Coolscan 4000.Ended
up with totally washed out scans,a lot worse then with the normal
settings.Any special trick Paul?
