Martin,

Right on!!! To my eye, nothing I've seen, yet, beats a well executed silver print on selenium toned Oriental. One of my favs for many years. And, the "color" I generally was trying to reach was as you describe.

Thanks for the memorys...think I'll go wash the Dektol from under my fingernails, now.

Best regards,
Alan

Jerry,

I have always toned vigorously to get a deep eggplant color in the shadows
and touch of magenta in the midtones preferably with cool highlight
(Oriental VC was the greatest). Beauty in the eye of the beholder and all
that stuff.

May not be common but I know there are others besides myself.

Martin

Alan,

Yeah but after all that heavy toner exposure I have difficulty typing and
spelling. Did I really type that subject line? Groan.

I was devastated during the period Oriental went off the market. There was
nothing else that felt right.

The Selenium PiezoTones come closer to scratching that itch than anything
else I have tried with inkjet printing.

Re: [Digital BW] SElenium Tonin was Density Measurements on 2200 Wedges

2002-08-12 by Truman Prevatt

Yep, on most of my shots I am after the cool whites and the cold blacks
- very slightly to the deep purple side. Oriental was wonderful for
this as was the Zone VI paper. One of the most striking exhibit I
remember seeing was of nudes toned to a very cold tone. The subject and
the tone of the prints had a distinct emotional impact. I asked the
photographer about it and he said the trick he used to get that tone was
very concentrate selenium toner.

RE: [Digital BW] SElenium Tonin was Density Measurements on 2200 Wedges

2002-08-13 by A. Huntley

Martin,

I don't about that heavy toner exposure, but I do have essence of F-5 and glacial acid in an atomizer for spraying around the room just prior to working on my Mac. It is hard to judge color balance and tonality under that dim yellow glow throughtout the room, though! I, too, was deeply disappointed when Oriental disappeared from the market; as I have been many times when good products are removed due to lack of demand. PanX, and to REALLY date myself, Ilfomar. I wonder if anyone remembers that paper? I agree Piezo ST has a wonderful "color" to it...I just could not eliminate the banding on my 1160. However, based on your recommendation, and others that I've read posted here, I may invest in a 1280 and some PT-ST cartridges and give 'er another run.

Best regards,
Alan
