What is the closest profile for Hahnemuhle Photo Rag in the Epson C80?

What is the closest profile for Hahnemuhle Photo Rag in the Epson C80?

2002-08-22 by wangalb

Hi folks,

I ran out 10 black and white prints on my Epson C80 and they turned
out decent on the Epson regular Glossy paper (not Preminum). However,
I noticed that it isn't exactly a true black and white print but has
a color cast (slightly magnetia) to it considering that it used all 4
colors to recreate the gray tones. The printing specs are impressive
and the Glossy paper reminds me of a good Duraflex print ;)...

I'm also considering sticking in some Hahnemuhle Photo Rag into my
Epson C80 but I can't find the profile for it under the options.
Should I use the Epson Archival Matte standard? I presume that the
Photo Rag is closest to that?

Anyways, what is the general consensus on the Photo Rag? Is it
durable and wearproof (like the black inks won't rub off in everyday
use) or it is more of a paper which needs to be behind glass? I
assume that Epson Archival Matte is fairly durable and rub-proof if I
want to make test proofs and definitely exhibition quality prints
using Cone's inks next year when I get the Epson 1280.

Cool beans. As long as I can figure out to stick Photo Rag into my
C80 I won't be getting any sleep soon.

Alfie,

Epson does not profile any paper other than their own. "Archival
Matte" setting is probably a good point to start, or even "Photo
Qulaity Inkjet Paper". My advice - try it once and see where it leads
you.

Good luck.

If you are not trying to print with a monochrome image with a color tint,
try using only black ink with the C80. You may or may not like the results
but give it a try.

Alfie,

If you printed with the glossy paper setting, you actually only used
three inks on the C80. The black ink does not adhere well to the gloss
stock, and consequently, it is bypassed on the glossy setting. If you
set the printer to matt, you will be using all 4 inks, but if you don't
spray the print, the black will then rub off.

Hi Karl,

I presume that with both Heavyweight Matte and Archival Matte and H.
Photo Rag that the black will rub off if I am not planning to stick
the print under glass or spray with the protective coating layer?

Any tips on an even spraying on the matte paper for protection?

thanks,
Alfie

Alfie,

If you take a look at this site
http://www.inkjetart.com/c80/better_blacks.html
you'll find some good info on using your C80, including the following:

Sealing Your Prints

If you take a soft cotton cloth or a cotton ball you can actually buff
away the non-encapsulated black ink right off your Premium gloss prints!
In order for these prints to be durable, they must be laminated or top
coated with a glossy spray. The Lyson Print Guard spray is not
recommended for glossy prints if you want to maintain a high gloss look.
The Bulldog Ultra "Gloss" spray will give you excellent protection and a
high gloss finish, but we have noticed that it dissolves a small
percentage of the yellow pigment ink and causes it to migrate. We have
tried several Krylon clear sprays (i.e. their Crystal Clear acrylic
coating and their Kamar Varnish). Our best success has been with
Krylon's "Low Odor Clear Gloss" finish #7110. This product is a clear
latex enamel, costing about $4.00 per 11 oz. aerosol can. We found the
best results with this product came when we quickly applied a few light
coats (varying the spray pattern between coats) to "set" the print, let
dry for 5 to 10 minutes, then applied a very wet and smooth final coat.
This thick coating will immediately go cloudy and somewhat milky, but
will dry clear within a hour or two.

'Most everything I know, I gleaned from inkjetart's website, and I don't
recall there being any info on lamination other than the recommendation
to do it.

You might try dropping them a note.

If you're not going to "fool" the printer into using black ink on glossy
stock, there's little reason to laminate or spray, as the ink will
adhere to matt surfaces. Also, though there is a loss of d-max when
printing CMY, I'm not sure if I like the appearance of the image with
CMYK - it looks kinda surreal, like the black is floating above the
image. Possibly spraying will reduce that effect.
