News on the Sundace/R9 Software

2002-08-23 by Martin Wesley

Some news from Digital Art Supplies about the different versions of the Sundance/R9 software:

"IMAGE EXPORT BW
Image Export BW is an Adobe Photoshop export plug-in that runs under the Windows and Macintosh operating systems and drives Epson desktop printers. Export BW allows the user to take advantage of Photoshops file handling and image manipulation features in an environment familiar to most photographers and artists. The Windows version of Image Export BW runs under Photoshop versions 5 and higher. All 32-bit versions of Windows are supported. The Macintosh version of Image Export BW runs under Photoshop versions 5 and higher. The new announcement is that a version for MacOS 10.1 is now available. This software was written to work best with Sundance Neutral Warm & Neutral Cool inks. The purchase price is $149.95 http://www.digitalartsupplies.com/r9imexbwplug.html

BWPRO
BWPro is a raster image processor that runs under the Windows operating system and drives Epson desktop and wide-format printers. All 32-bit versions of Windows are supported. The RIP drives Epson desktop and wide-format printers, up to 42 in width. A single licensed RIP can drive multiple printers at the same time. The RIP uses extended ICQ profiles, that can be manipulated via a unique user interface called K to L mapping, and that allow the user to apply the characteristics of the B&W printing system when previewing an image.http://www.digitalartsupplies.com/sunbwepripst.html This can be purchased as a system with Sundance inks or as standalone software.

BWPRO LITE
BWPro Lite is a raster image processor that runs under the Windows operating system and drives Epson desktop printers. All 32-bit versions of Windows are supported.

The BWPRO is selling for $1,450 and the BWPRO LITE for $495. Looks like they are trying to fill the same price ranges as PiezoPro and ImagePrint. I assume that this is the same software as the Piezo plugin and PiezoPro. Does anyone have any experience to relate to using the PiezoPro with desktop printers?

Martin,

Have you posted this on the Piezo listserve?

Things in the world of digital B&W printing are getting more
complicated.

From the description, this software sounds the same as Piezo plugin
and Piezo Pro. The current Piezo Pro software is about to be
replaced by a new version. On top of that, ImagePrint, who I believe
orginally developed "Piezo2" (not pursued) for Jon Cone, have their
own advanced B&W solution as part of their RIP, which of course has
one advantage, in that it drives colour printers too.

We will shortly therefore have a choice of three competing B&W Pro
level RIPs: The B&WPRO from Sundance (presumably a new incarnation
of the current Cone RIP), the new Piezo Pro RIP from Jon Cone, and
the ImagePrint 5 colour/B&W RIP.

Market is getting a bit crowded all of a sudden :-)

To answer your question, I have printed to a 1160 using Piezo B&W
Pro, and the result looked pretty identical to using the plugin.

Actually it's not correct.

BW Pro is the RIP for the wide format printers $1450

BW Pro lite is the same RIP but for desktop printers only $ 495

Image Export is the stand alone PhotoShop plug in for desktop
printers $150

Re: News on the Sundace/R9 Software

Is this fishy ?

BW Pro=Piezography BW pro=Imageprint 5.0=~1500

BW Pro lite = Imageprint 5.0 (desktop) = $495

Image Export=Piezography plugin=$150

Is this a collusion or are R9=Piezography=Imageprint.

Re: News on the Sundace/R9 Software

I think the connection is between current Piezography products and
the new BW Pro products, which have (I believe) a common origin.

ImagePrint is a seperate product. Colorbyte were at one time working
to help Inkjetmall with a new version of the Piezography software,
but are no longer doing so, and my understanding is that Inkjetmall
are working with others to that end.

The only apparent connection is between the *current", but soon to be
replaced, Inkjetmall Peizography product, and the BW Pro product.

So, if all this is correct, then it appears there will be three
different products and suppliers to choose from soon, which means
more choice for us.

I use Piezography Pro, the current inkjetmall product, and have
ImagePrint 5 on order.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
