microtek are the manufacturers of the polaroid ss4000 and it is a great
scanner. I 've used one for ages. Don't hesitate!

Yes, with LED lighting, you will get sharper results but lots of
scratches and dust. You can't use ICE with silver based films. (black
and white and kodachrome).

thanks for you replies.  if i use XP2 or the kodak equivalent, i won't have that problem though, will i?  
and while i'm on the subject, is a silver-based negative (say, tri-x) any better than XP2 when the prints are made digitally from scans?
