This is normally a problem with the print spooler. I was playing around
with my HP with some of my scanned 4x5's. I desktop which is also a
server for a local network. I have my laptop on the network when I'm at
home and my wife's computer is on it also. When I printed at large file
from the server it would eject. This was true in both Picture Window and
Photoshop. I contacted HP and was told it is the size of the file that
has to be spooled. They gave me some fixes but none worked.

I then went to the laptop (I have Picture Window on the laptop) and
printed it over the network (the printer is hooked to the desk top). No
problem. I think printing this large a file requires a large number of
system resources and the desktop because of what else it is doing
doesn't have the necessary resources ( a big MS problem - wouldn't be a
problem in Unix ). The laptop is not tied up doing other things so has
more resources available.

So you might want to check out your system configuration and see if you
can tune it.

Peter,

Do you check the "Print Preview" box on the "Main" tab in the "Printer
Preferences" box? A preview will tell you if all of the image is being sent
to the spooler.

If the image is truncated then in the "Printer Preferences" box under the
"Utility" tab click the "Speed & Progress" button then check the "Always
spool RAW datatype". This has eliminated a similar problem for me.

I hate it when that happens.

I know of one reason it does this, Are you sure you have enough memory?
Other than that, I don't know.

Howdy Jer (and All..!),

I have a similar problem with my 2000p from a Mac G4... after 4 or 5
13x19 prints, print quality either goes to hell, or the page
continues through the printer, getting no ink but for the initial
inch or so that fades to nothing...

a head cleaning usually fixes it, but the inconvenience sucks!

if it's a memory problem, do you mean more ram in general or just
more devoted to the epson driver..?

Hi Tom,

Both.

How much RAM have you on your computer? I have a GIG and it is not too much.

I give Photoshop 750,000 Megabytes

I have increased the epson monitor 3 application by 3 times the
recommended amount.

This is only one reason why this could be happening, especially if you
are really short on memory. Memory is unbelieveably cheap right now, go
get some!

However, I can't see memory problems causing print quality decline. And
you wouldn't think that cleaning it would have anything to do with it
spitting out the print before it was finished. And how could you get
total clogging so fast?

However, as a last resort, this usually works for cleaning: Squirt
about 5ml ammonia/water solution (1:9) directly into the nipples of the
print head. Do a few cleanings and see if it does the trick. It may
take 2 or 3 times to get all the clogged up ink dissolved, it took 2
applications for me, but it DID work.

Re: [Digital BW] Premature page eject with B&W printing

2002-08-27 by kd7mw

Well, folks, it turned out that my nearly 900 meg fixed swap file
(1.5x 576 megs memory) wasn't enough. I've changed to a windows-
managed dynamic swap file on my D: drive, and all is well. I like a
fixed swap file because it can make the machine faster. But I'm not
going to argue with success, and I'd rather not waste lots of ink and
paper figuring out an exact setting.

I also put Picture Window Pro's temp files onto my D: drive.

Since there is quite a bit of disk activity while printing, so I
suspect it was the swap file.

Thanks to everyone for their help!

Howdy Jerry,

I have 768Megs of ram (and it's a 3-year-old G4) but only 200 of it
allocated to photoshop. I'll try that increase as well as tripling
the driver's amount.

it doesn't spit the print out early, it keeps on going, just no ink
flow after the first inch or so..!

at first I thought the large prints were consuming loads of ink, and
I really could only get 5 Super A3s from the cartridge. but it has
happened twice right after fresh ink was installed. and not to bring
superstition into the mix, but my 13th print took four tries!!!

and there was a strange connection to my success with a game I was
playing on my pc while waiting... during those first four print
attempts, I lost very quickly, but when I started out strong on the
fifth game, I noticed the print coming nicely through the printer!!!
probably coincidence, but that's what I noticed...

now that's a-dot-iotic!!!

Tom

Hi Bob,

Well, if anything, you should notice a marked improvement with
photoshops speed at doing everyday tasks! Can't understand how you could
be getting clogs so fast, especially all inks at the same time.
Hopefully, somebody else who has experienced the problem will be able to
chime in here.
