Why does using the black ink only produce such a grainy result?

Why does using the black ink only produce such a grainy result?

2002-08-27 by bengunsberger

Hi all,

I'm brand new to digital printing. I have an Epson Stylus 780 and
have finally calibrated it to the point where I can get pretty
accurate colour prints.

My question is, is there any way, other than a separate set of grey
inks to get good B&W prints? When I try to use just the black ink,
it comes out VERY grainy. Obviously the colour inks produce a
noticeable cast.

I apoligise if this is an old question. I tried to search through
the archives but couldn't find an answer.

Thanks,

Ben

No, a number of us have tried, and most think the results are just not up to
what a "quad" system can produce. Some like the grainy effect of black only
printing, but I don't.

I once thought I had my color pigment inkset balanced well enough to
succeed. However, the colors shifted and the prints looked awful within
months of printing. The eye is just incredibly sensitive to very slight
color variations with neutral B&W prints.
