I know that with silver fiber I could see a small difference by getting the Dmax up from the 2.1-2.2 range to 2.4-2.6 by selenium toning. With inkjet though I suspect the discernable limit on matte papers may be around 2.0 I think that the light scatter effect of matte surface tends to take over and no matter how much you increased the Dmax of the ink you wouldn't know the difference. Now Richard said he was printing on a "microporous luster paper" which I assume is one of the semigloss or glossy papers and the additional Dmax is probably visible. Martin
