Do the digital SLRs have more immediate shutter response? For

Yes, the Nikon D1x and Canon D60 have an almost instantaneous shutter.
An expensive testing machine would put the film cameras ahead, but for
all practical purposes, they are equal to film cameras. Remember, these
cameras have the ability to shoot many frames per second, just like film
cameras. They still wouldn't be the very best choice if you are a sports
photographer, I suppose.
