What is the best to use RGB or CMYK mode for printing Quadtones ?

What is the best to use RGB or CMYK mode for printing Quadtones ?

2002-09-08 by pcbladefr

Hello,

I'm new to quadtones technique, and I would know what is the best mode
to use in order to print with my Epson 780 model (6 colors).

I use Photoshop 3 and quadtones from Lyson (Quadblack neutral).

I can use RGB or CMYK in the Epson driver, but it's quite disturbing
to use RGB mode for greyscale image, hoping that the automatic
conversion facility of the printer can achieve the best assignment of
the 6 greys inks.

So, I would like to know if I must stay in RGB, perhaps with some CMYK
adjustment or if I have to go through real CMYK process.

If someone has some fine transfer functions for Lyson inks, I would
appreciate to get them.

Thank you, a french newbie !

Pierre-François Bonnefoi.

Cher Pierre-François,

CMYK is not an option unless you use a sophisticated RIP. With RGB you
have better control of the way the image will print if you use the Epson dr=
iver.
You may find RGB curves - such as the ones Paul Roark et al have written - =
to
partition the inks into the grays of the image. Look in our archives for mo=
re
info.

Better yet, see if you can get software and profiles that will do that for =
you,
such as the R9 or Colorbyte products - though I don't remember if ImagePrin=
t
supports Lyson inks. I doubt either will work with Photoshop versions pre 5=
.

Antonis.

Hello Pierre-Francois,
Where Are the Paul Roark archives on RGB partitioned curves ??

Thanks,
Alex

You can get them at this URL
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/workflow_roark.html

I've tried them...and I think my print are improved !

The curves are made specifically for MIS inks, and that seems to work
with Lyson inks too.

I use the 1270 epson files for my 780(790 in Europe).

But, I would appreciate to know how to adjust them precisely for my
kind of paper, in order to control dot gain.

Does someone know the kind of ink and placment of these inks into
Lyson cartridge ?

Pierre-François.

I entered two of my prints in the Utah State Fair Photography Competition,
Professional Division. Both were printed on my 1270 with MIS VM inks using
the Roark workflows on Royal Plush paper. One, an image of machinery at the
Baron Woolen Mills in Brigham City, Utah, won Third Place. This photo was
taken with a Zone VI 4x5 and scanned at 2400 ppi on my Epson 2450. The
other photo, an image of a fly fisherman in the Provo River during a
snowstorm, won Best of Show and Judge's Choice. This photo was 35mm scanned
at 4000 ppi on my SS4000. Links to both photos are on my website front page.

We now return you to your usual argument, still in progress.

Stan
