"Photo Rag has to be tweaked a bit

Jerry, could you elaborate on this a little bit? I am using the
Photo Rag copy from Media Street and I would love to get the deeper blacks
from the generations inks. I was wondering how you go about "tweaking" it.
I also use mostly the warm Tyler curves, would this still work OK or should
I use Paul's curves for this process? Thanks.

I'm using Bright white satine. Never tried the soft white. I use his
curves as is for EAM paper. Then for Eclipse, I darken the image on
screen by 15 percent in the Levels Dialogue box. Just take down the
middle slider to 85. (assuming it's 100 when you open the dialogue box).
This is with the Enhanced K Generations in use with the MIS VM inkset.
The VM black is not all that black, and you will find a nice deepening
of the black with the enhanced K. It's nice on the Eclipse satine paper,
but nicer on EAM and photo rag. Photo Rag has to be tweaked a bit
differently than the other 2 papers.

Jim, I only had 1 pack of photo rag from media street, and it's just
about gone. Haven't used it for awhile, but I did use Paul Roark's
curves and print the image in the RGB Mode. I used the cool, and neutral
curves from Paul, I've never used the warm ones, except to test them
once. If I remember, it seems as you have to have your image a tad
contrastier and a little lighter on the monitor than when using
brightcube's eclipse satine. (But darker than if you were printing on
EAM paper). Try varying the gamma (middle triangle) in the Levels
dialogue box. For EAM its 100, For Eclipse, it's 85, for Photo Matte its
90, and I THINK the photo rag was 95. These are done on an adjustment
layer in photoshop. Be sure you set the black point so you get a true
black somewhere in the print, or measure your deepest black and be sure
it is 100 percent black.

I just got my new 1160 up and running with a new CIS and new MIS VM inks
a few days ago. One thing, if you like the deep blacks, get the
generations 4 enhanced black ink from media street and substitute it for
the VM black position ink. the VM BLACK ink does not give a satisfying
black.
