I have an Epson 1280 and will purchase the new 2200. I will want one printer dedicated for B&W. Should I use the 1280 with a B&W inkset or should I use the 2200 with the inkset ? I'm new to the B&W side of digital and not sure where to start. Regards, Marc

Marc, Sounds like you are at where I expect to be in a few weeks. I just sold my Epson 2000P and will replace it with a 2200. I want the 2200 first for color but am also interested in seeing what it will do with b/w. I also have a 1280 I use solely for b/w printing. I've been using the MIS FS ink set and will try the MIS FS-N ink when the FS carts run out. I make prints using the PiezographyBW Photoshop plug-in. The Piezography driver is a pretty easy way to go as it has built-in profiles for a number of papers. The MIS FS inks work fairly well with the PZ driver. I've had good results with these papers: Crane's Museo, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and German Etching (called Orwell on Jon Cone's site -- see below). Going with the MIS FS carts in the 1280 is fairly easy. You don't need to get cleaning carts if you've been using the Epson ink. Just run a few flush images and cleaning cycles when you put the MIS carts in (see the MIS Web site for more information). The PZ driver will cost you a bit -- $150. Some links if you are interested: MIS (ink and paper): www.inksupply.com PZ software (developed by a company called R9 and for a time sold exclusively by Jon Cone's InkJetMall company): www.bwguys.com Place to get the software and paper: www.inkjetgoodies.com Place to get more paper: www.inkjetart.com Jon Cone's site (software and paper): www.inkjetmall.com Something else to consider: Rumour has it Epson will be releasing a b/w inkset for the 2200. Marc, At the moment there are no grayscale inks available for the 2200 and there will not be (unless Epson does them) until the cartridge chips have been reverse engineered and/or chip resetters designed. I suspect that the wait for chips will be much shorter than wait was for the 1280. So your best bet would be to put gray inks in the 1280 and use the 2200 for color and B&W perhaps.
