Illustrator or Quark to start with?

Canvas

CorelDraw

need we go on?

And you completely ignored the OVERLAY option...

Well, support for older hardware would be a nice idea... Hell, if you
can't use your 1280 (Still sold by EPSON mind you) with full Jaguar
functionality, just buy a 2200... Yeah, that's the ticket...

Or perhaps CUPS is good enough... Of course, EPSON has nothing to do
with CUPS...

You also wholly ignored my point about single color purges..

If you choose to answer don't act like a White House spin doctor and
make believe you are answering all questions fully while answering only
those you have answers for that make you come off positively.

Henry Wilhelm learned something awhile back... I hold people 100%
publicly and permanently accountable for representations they make (like
his NEW public data, promised 2 years ago -- that never got here)... If
the promises (explicit or implicit) aren't kept, their reputations
deserve to take the hits for it...

Funny Andrew, you were quick to make assertions that the saved money
would go into better drivers... any particular reason you seem to be
backing away from the certitude of your earlier statements? Know
something we don't about what printers EPSON will NOT be supporting in
updated drivers, perhaps?

EPSON apparently got Wilhelm to concede keeping data unpublished.. They
refused to update drivers to give us better inks (alleging it would
confuse end-users), but were willing to do so for profits money when
they added a Chinese ink source. They have a track record of making
choices to maximize profits at the expense of any other consideration
(chipping flawed inksets, and later suing third party cartridge
manufacturers, etc.) I'm not indicting you in any way, I just think you
should accept the fact that your blue ribbon panel has given them the
cover to save costs today and like Wimpy in the old Popeye cartoons
"while promising us better product as a DIRECT result in future"... If
they follow through they'd be much more altruistic than is the corporate
norm.. and in your own heart I think you recognize that reality...

Yes they make some great products, yes I use them... That in no way
means I should or will ignore ways in which they blow smoke at, mislead,
or abuse end-users..

You must be using different drivers than are publicly available then:

To quote from a response to this post on the MacEpson list:

So, Andrew, do those features work in YOUR 2200 running under Jaguar
with the current publicly released drivers? Just wondering...

I also don't recall restricting my comments on the Mac OS 10.2/Jaguar
drivers to the 2200...

How about this other comment from the MacEpson list:

Sounds to me like those savings are going elsewhere other than better
drivers.. ;-)

And please don't start going on about how EPSON is a small company with
limited resources... Seiko-Epson is one of the largest Keretsu in
Japan... Stop trying to make them sound like a cash-short, impoverished,
mom and pop firm. It amazes me how a firm like EPSON cannot come out
with drivers with better feature sets, with a wide number of engineering
employees, and people like Ed Hamrick, as sole software engineer for
VueScan can come out with constant updates, continually adding new
hardware and features, while supporting Windoze, Linus, and McOS.. ;-)

I've begun to wonder if Japanese firms have some type of cultural issue
preventing the same kind of support.. Canon and Nikon seem to have
always had inordinately long delays between upgrades in software for
both cameras and scanners.. (And for a someone like I, a fan of much of
Japanese culture, making this leap takes a lot)

And I don't pick unfairly on EPSON or Japanese firms, earlier this year,
LinkSys, in California, USA, released a series of products for which the
firmware and software were NOT "prime-time"...

I held LinkSys's feet to the fire and they eventually upgraded both
firmware and software.

See the following Network World article as one example:

http://www.nwfusion.com/net.worker/columnists/2002/0225kistner.html

My "problem" is that I expect a product to perform as advertised and be
FULLY supported for a few years after its initial sales... Both of which
seem rare things in the market of today.

With a Quickdraw driver? No way. You need a RIP.

The Epson driver is a non Postscript (GDI/Quickdraw) driver. Ain't going to fly
with Quark/Illustrator etc.

Yes, I have with no problems with control over resolution.

No, center is not working. But unless someone is using some really odd
paper, I've had no problem with "thicker" paper. I haven't tried roll printing.
