Digital BW, The Print

Ken,

I bought two of Lenswork Quarterly "special edition" prints that are on
Ilford silver paper from a contact neg done using Burkholder's method. They
scan a finished silver print and work from there which seems less than
ideal. The quality is excellent though and I would not be able to tell them
from a standard enlarged print. I believe the key is to get the imagesetter
output up to 3600+ dpi. So it can be done. Maybe it would be worth
contacting Lenswork and seeing which service bureau in Portland they use.

I think these negs may be made by Russ Dodd, who creates Lenswork's gravure
editions. The service bureau (they would grimace), again I think, is Color
Technologies, Inc, a place I used to work as a retoucher. They have an Agfa
Avantra for film output and Russ was impressed with the sharpness of the dot
it produced. I can get their number for anyone who wants to give them a
call.

Thanks for the info. I would appreciate the phone numbers for future
reference. Working with a company that is already tuned in to making digital
negs at the quality level used for the Lenswork's editions is valuable info.
The biggest barrier to going in this direction is that you don't get to run
the equipment yourself and frequently are trying to work with people who may
not have a clue as to what you want to achieve and keep giving you a
prepress solution. At one time we had the editor of Lenswork posting about
the editions and he promised to give us the workflow in detail but never
returned.
