Newbie here to b& w printing forum(profile question)

2001-09-08 by matrixjjj@yahoo.com

Hello everyone
I have been absorbed totally in this forum and have found
lots of answers to questions already. One question I do have is on
Epson 870 printer profiles and also HP 932 printer profiles . Where
can these be found? Thanks in advance and I hope soon to participate
more in discussions.

Hi,

Didn't catch your name there but I am going to respond to your
questions with some questions to get a better idea of where you want
to go.

1. Do you want to print B&W using the manufacturer's color inks in
the 870 or 932?

2. Do you want to dedicate one of these two printers to use quadra
tone inks to make B&W prints?

If you want to do #1 then there are various approaches but a good ICC
profile would help. These can be purchased for the specific printer
already written, custom made for your individual printer or you can
use you scanner with programs like EZColor to make your own profiles.
These profiles are designed for color printing but a well-calibrated
system is a real plus in creating B&W prints with color ink sets.

If you want to do #2 it is possible by refilling cartridges with
quadra tone inks but there are no profiles for these two prints and
you will need to develop your own curves or profiles. Not impossible
but not the easiest path.

My name is Dan Rivers. How well would dedicating a Epson 400 do for
black and whites? I guess I would dedicate the Hp 932 to the
quadtones.

Hi Dan,

Welcome aboard!

For printing B&W with color inks any color printer will do if you are
willing to stick with the manufacturer's inks. For the quad inks or
other color sets you either have to hand load cartridges and develop
the software end yourself or use a printer that already has inks,
cartridges and software (curves, profiles, drivers) available.

All of the quad printing grew out of the Iris inkjet field and moved
onto the Epson 3000. From there it spread to some other Epson models.
Just as Mac's pretty much dominated the computer graphics field so
did Epson. The end result is that there is very little, if anything,
available for any other brand and only a few of the Epsons.

The most common Epsons being used with quad inks appear to be the
1160, 3000 and 1200. You almost have to choose which ink set you want
to use first and then look at what software, printers and printer
support is available.

In choosing inks you have to decide between the dye based and the
pigmented. Then within those categories choose which brand.

The simplest way to do quads might be to get a refurbished 1200 from
Epson (1160's are hard to come by) and get the PiezoBW inks with the
CIS (Continuous Ink Supply) at a cost of about $1,000. Another
alternative would be to go with MIS which is less expensive but the
software end is not a neatly packaged. The MIS site seems to be down
tonight so I can't give you a good price comparison but my 1280 with
CIS and MIS VM inks cost me about $850. If you can find an 1160, you
could get into the MIS inks for a lot less, probably under $500.

Lysonic makes some quad dye based cartridges but not for either of
your printers and they offer no software. Lincoln Inks also has dye
based quad ink in bulk that you could load into you current
cartridges and some workflows that could be adapted. I really don't
know how workable they would be with your printers.

This probably is not what you wanted to hear but that is pretty much
the current state of affairs.
