Hi Carolyn,

I am new to printing and most of what you have been discussing is
over my head. However, am I correct in this post that you print
duotones? I am printing selenium-toned duotones with some adjustment
in the curve box beside the color. Do you print any selenium type
duotones that you like and wouldn't mind sharing? My site url is at
the bottom of this post so you can see the type of images that I use
for my printing. Any help you care to give will be most appreciated.
It seems that most people prefer straight b/w as opposed to the type
of printing I do. Consequently, when anyone mentions duotones they
immediately get my attention. Thank you.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

No, over your head is "talking" on a list with amazing photographers when
you only take photos of your kids/dogs/flowers etc.

I've visited your site before, your images are beautiful... serene. What
printer are you using? I really like duo-tones with Epson inks but on my
2000P I do not have great luck getting a nice print without the green issue.
(others do though) With the dye inks I can get a lovely print, just no
longevity. I prefer duo/tri/quad tones for a lot of my personal images but
I've never seen a true selenium toned photograph so cannot offer a curve set
that would match that tone.

I take it from your post that you are using the duotone presets, have you
tried the tri or quad tones? I prefer using the grayscale/duotone(tri
quad)/rgb procedure for any sharper, clear images because the prints have
the crispness that they deserve. (the colors map better) For softer,
textured images sometimes I'll use the Hue/Saturation sliders with
"colorize" checked. Have you played with that?

Sorry, I'm not much help... It's usually a matter of playing with the curves
in the presets as you've described until you achieve the tone you like.

Best,
Carolyn

I have done some serious selenium toning on silver prints. Where can I see
your work Carolyn? I could tell you how they compare. I'll try and find
something to scan.

Trish,

Would you please scan an example to the list so I can see it as well?
I'm very interested in selenium toning. Thank you.

Re: [Digital BW] 4 Carolyn Frayn

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for the kind words. I use a 1280 with OEM inks for the
moment. I will be shifting to MIS archival color in a few weeks, as
soon as their color cartridges arrive.
Yes I use the PS6.01 canned duotones and then play with the color
curve until I like the result. Then I save the curve to use again. I
don't save my website images in duotone, they just have minor
corrections and cropping. My duotones are used only for printing. If
you have any suggestions, any and all help is appreciated.
There are many on this list who have been very helpful.I appreciate
their help and patience very much. Thank you.

Kindest regards,

Tim

David Michael Kennedy works a lot in platinum and palladium.
You can view many small web images on his site. There's also a
good platinum infosheet under his Reference section. He
teaches also at the Santa Fe workshop.

Also, Rod Cook works in platinum. I've seen his prints in
NewOrleans:

Thank you Mark.

They remind me of a sepia tone which I like for some of my images.
For many of them, though, I like a blue/black look to the shadows
while retaining as much of the white as I can. The mid grey's I would
like to be as rich as possible but have never been satisfied to date
with them. That is why I keep hoping to find someone that has
realized this richness and wouldn't mind sharing their success. I
actually use a purple/black combination which works quite well.
