Hi all,

I've enjoyed the list for somewhile, you've been instrumental in my
choices in point of fact. I now need a benchmark and some help please
(be gentle with me, but explaine as though your talking to a moron!!!)

My system is set up and calibrated for Gen4. My monitor is calibrated
with a spyder and a densinometer and profiler pro make my printer
profiles for use with my 1290. ALL is spot on.... until I go mono...

I've an 1160 with CIS using MIS variable tone printing on sommerset
and ICI. My problem is my screen and output no longer match as close
to my prints as my colour work. They are daker and don't exhibit as
much tone. Am I expecting too much, does my system need
recalibrating???

What are the best settings in the Epson print driver? do I need to
reset my photoshop settings??? can I build a custom profile using the
kit I've got???? When printing a 21 step wedge the mid and hi tones
seem to fall off rapidly is this right.

Please, please guide me in the right direction. I can't afford to
waste to much time. If this is to purile for the list feel free to
contact me direct at mcgillicuddy@...

Many thanks in advance....

McGillicuddy,

a couple of pointers (while waiting for others to jump in):

- go to the MIS site for info on using the VM inks

- if you are sending RGB data to the printer, you can use some of the functions
of Photoshop 6 or 7 to preview using custom profiles. Too long to get into
here, but look up a good book like "Real World Photoshop" to get some basic
notions of color management . If your monitor is already calibrated and
profiled, don't change that, just the preview/color setup in PS.

You should be able to get a full grayscale to print.

Eventually others here with experience using the VM inkset will hopefully
come to the rescue! I have not used those inks myself.

Antonis
