Gimp and quadtone printing

Gimp and quadtone printing

2002-10-28 by Carl Schofield

Has anyone tried printing quadtones (or hextones) using the latest (for
OS 10.2) gimp print release? There is a "quadtone" setting in the
driver, but I'm not sure how it should be used with specific inksets.
According to this excerpt from the release notes it is still beta:

"Quad tone grayscale inks, such as the Piezography (TM) inks, are
now supported for most Epson Stylus printers. This is not tuned
for a particular inkset at this time, so the results will not be
of top quality yet. This capability should be considered beta."

Wow! That's an exciting development!

I wonder if there's a way this community can help the gimprint people
tune their drivers towards our inksets/printers. I'd love to see them
support the VM inkset directly, for instance.

I am just finishing my first gimprint hextone.

I printed from a file with no curves applied, using the standard gimp
settings but with "quadtone" enabled.

My printer is a 1280 using VM inkset.

The print is better than I expected, but definitely not good enough
for prime-time (the blue toner appears in odd places, mostly.) I have
a feeling though that with some tuning this could be a wonderous
development for those of us using macs or other CUPS-enabled systems.

Charles-
You can't expect the Gimp "quadtone" setting to produce acceptable results
with the VM inks- it doesn't include any provision for toning inks! It
might work with the cone or FS inks, as they are 4 inks only. It will be
best with a modified FS type inkset, with a true light cyan and magenta.

I met with the project lead for Gimp-Print, Robert Krawitz, over the
weekend. He is interested in (and familiar with) the issues of Quad-tone
printing, but remember that this is volunteer programming, and progress may
be slow on particular issues. I hope to know more in the coming weeks.

Yeah, I had a feeling that would be the case, but I figured it was
worth one sheet of paper to find out :)

I don't know if it will be possible for them to support the VM set,
but if it would be at all helpful to run numerous test prints for
tuning, I'd be delighted to do that for them.

Robert was a regular writer on the Leben Epson list. Adding Quad printing to
Gimp-print was one of the topics then discussed. Glad to read that that did
become a reality.
