Can I ask why you dislike the Nikon San software? I've never used anything
else, but I seem to get good results with it, of course I do a lot of stuff
afterwards in PShop. I was just wondering how Vue Scan can improve on this
process? Thanks.

Not to sound flippant but try harder with Vuescan. NikonScan is awful.
As for exact settings for B&W with Vuescan it really varies, not only
emulsion to emulsion but exposure to exposure. Do not try for a
"perfect" look from the scan but for a good, wide histogram. This will
look flatter than desired after the scan but then 16-bit levels and
curves tweaking in Photoshop is FAR better than using the scanner
software for corrections and possible clipping of the histogram edges.

I tried Silverfast Ai and it seemed to do an ok job but I cannot
imagine why anyone would pay $300 for it.

Firstly I really dislike the Nikon Scan interface. Also I find it very
inconsistent. And although not a B&W issue but still important is that
Nikon Scan is notorious for very poor color management and handling,
which leads back to my inconsistent comment. Jeff Schewe and Andrew
Rodney went off on this aspect for a spell at the San Francisco DIFP
(Digital Imaging for Photographers) workshop.

I find Vuescan much more straight forward and I find much more
consistent and more "spot on", sometimes on the first preview scan.
