Printer Recommendation Sought

Printer Recommendation Sought

2002-11-25 by normsams

I've been happy with what my Epson 870 does with color images, but would
like to find a printer that will do better with black-and-white. I've done
some experimenting with the MIS quodtones, but I don't do enough
black-and-white to warrant a separate printer, which seems to be the way to
go with MIS.

How good are the Epson 6-color printers for B&W? Any recomenndations for
models? Or for other brands which will give me quality color and better
B&W than what I'm now getting. Maybe less expensive than $500. 8.5 X 11 is
the largest print size I need.

Is it a case of not wanting a second printer purely from a print
volume point of view or also lack of space? If space isn't a
problem, how about getting on ebay for a used 860 or even 870/890.
You'll prbably pay less than a new printer capable of both good
colour output and cast free black and white output. In the new
printer category, your options are probably limited to the 2200.

Norm:
I'm very happy with my Epson 1280. They're only about $350 now after
rebate. I've done very little color but from what I've seen others do,
they look good. I'm printing black only and pleased with the results.
My Cone driver and inkset arrived today. I hope to find time to play
with it soon. But, I'm a bit hesitant to give up the Epson black only
as it looks so good to me. Plus, one mouse click and I can do either
color or black & white.
