Mac OS 10.2.3 and my Piezotone driver died

Mac OS 10.2.3 and my Piezotone driver died

2002-12-22 by craygc <craygc@yahoo.com>

I just allowed an update to Mac OS 10.2.3 today and have given myself a
large headache.

Firstly some history. Ive never been able to launch OS 9 Classic under OS X
without it crashing before launching, however, I tried again today with OS
10.2.3 and the process prceeded further than usual, suggested it needed to
update some OS 9 resources to which I agreed and still crashed - end of story
I thought!

Later today I rebooted in OS 9.2.2 as usual, opened Photoshop 7, loaded an
image and selected Piezotone B&W export plugin but this time all got was the
Epson (1160) driver box. Even a reinstall / re-boot didnt change anything.

Does anyone have any idea whats gone on here....

regards
Craig

I don't Craig, but there's a lot about such things both on
MacInTouch.com and on the MacEpsonList, which also is a Yahoo list.
Good luck.

First you need to take care of the Classic problem. Have you run any kind of disk
utilities on OS 9 and X to find/fix problems? Did you try to do a clean install of OS
9? What was your original OS X version - like - did you upgrade to Jaguar or was it
clean-installed?

Try booting off the Jaguar install disk and run Disk First Aid and "Permissions Fix"
- forgot the real name, you'll know it when you see it.

No, but I feel your pain! Similar things happened when I first tried
System X. I'm now happily back to
system 9.2.2 and hopefully, will not ever be using X. Certainly not
until all the little hassles and bugs have been fixed.

It sounds to me as if the problem is with your System 9.2.2
installation. Perhaps you should reinstall System 9 from whatever
complete installation disk that you have and then install the 9.2.2
update...or have you done that already?

Hello

One or two ideas that might be of use:

Classic booting -- have you tried starting up classic with no extensions? I
found that some of my OS9 clutter that had built up over the years did not
like X. Although frowned on by some, I start up classic from a clean OS9
install on a separate (350MB) partition and keep my 'working' OS9 on a
different disk. There are various combinations of this, but I've found that
it pays to keep the systems apart.

Permissions -- well worth running the permissions fix after any upgrade. One
point is that if you use the copy on the original CD, you are fixing
permissions, as defined with that version of the OS. If you use the Disk
Utility in the applications/utilities folder you will use the up to date
permission list.

The printing side of X is getting much better, and I've only a few
(regularly used) applications that are unhappy in X. For example gimp-print
and HPIJC on my OS X server allows me to print to a PC only HP printer from
my OS9 machine (and as a postscript printer too!)

I'm finding OSX more and more usable, but I'm writing this from within OS9,
so perhaps X will have to wait for a new much faster machine :-))

bye for now

PS I've recently added a page of Mac specific links to the more general
photography /links page on the site above. They include quite a lot of stuff
on issues with X -- any suggestions for additions appreciated

Thanx to all that have offered advice.

I still dont know the cause of the problem, however, having just taken a day
out of my life over the last 24 hours I have manged to get a system that works.
The order had to be OS X first, but dont go past 10.2.2 then install OS 9 such
that OS X is unaware of it.

(Maybe its a bug in this machine - a G3 iMac special Edition DV [768Mb RAM]
- but Apple cant find problems with it so I'll give up and just be happy its
working for now)

Seeing the Piezotone Driver come up in OS 9 was such a "good" feeling...
Sorta justified the last day...

Craig
