PS7-OS X too sloooow

PS7-OS X too sloooow

2003-01-10 by phireworks <ron@proformasystems.com>

I've been late to jump on the OS X - Photoshop 7 bandwagon, but did
so a few days ago. Now I'm trying to figure out why. Photoshop 7 is
running what seems to be less than half as fast as it did when I was
running PS 6 under OS 9.2. Anybody know what's up with that?

TIA,

Ron

Are you allocating enough RAM?

PS7 on my OSX mac (G4 Dual 500, 1.2 gigs RAM) runs way faster than ps6
does under classic.

Hello

If OS 9 best meets your -current- needs then I'd say use it.

Much as I like a lot of OS X, it's (comparative) speed is not one of those
features. Someone raised this issue on the UK academic Mac support list
recently and received numerous comments about how nice it looked, how stable
it was, how you could use all that Open Source software ... But not one
comment addressing their point about it 'feeling' slower. Not quite the
emperors new clothes, but close :-))

I have both OS 9 and X on my main Mac and find that I'm still using 9 about
80% of the time (it was 90% a couple of months ago). I think the only way
that I'll switch is when I get a much faster Mac (that won't boot into 9 by
then) However, my laptop and fileserver are using 10.2.3 99% of the time.

I use PS7 on 9 and X, with older versions of PS on 9 (which work as well as
they ever did) I'm also finding that many of my Mac based clients are
sticking with 9, but that is mostly because of Quark.

Some people will never change on principal, but I suppose they are still
using System 6 on their MacII ("we don't need no steenkin PowerPC") :-))

bye for now

Everything being equal PS will run somewhat slower in OSX because of
the large overhead in X.
But not less then half?!
You can't allot RAM in OSX. The system does it for you by need.

You are mistaken on this point. In photoshop's memory preferences panel you can specify how much RAM it should use. Makes a big difference!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
