MIS CFS install help needed tonight (1/10/03 8:30 PM EST)

MIS CFS install help needed tonight (1/10/03 8:30 PM EST)

2003-01-11 by Bob_Michaels <Bob@BobMichaels.org>

I'm currently installing a MIS CFS system in my 1280 for the first
time. I just filled the carts using the vacumn pump. Somehow I must
have gotten the black tube above the ink level while filling it
because I ended up with mostly air in the feed line (the other are
mostly ink).

Can I just use the supplied bottom fill adapter and suck ink out of
the bottle into the line and cart? If so, do I have to wait a few
hours for the bubbles to go out of the ink in the cart before I
install it?
Is it better to do this before or after I install the cart in the printer?

Any other thoughts?

Bob,

Don't panic ---yet;-)

Did the black cartridge fill with ink? If the answer to this is yes,
I would not worry too much about the air in the feed line. Whne you
install the cartridges in the printer, inks will begin to be sucked
in, and the little bit of air in the feed line will end up on top of
ink in the cartridge. This is no problem at all.

If, however, little or no ink went in the cartridge, you may have to
start the process over again (prefereably with a new empty black
cartridge.

Good luck.

Shilesh:
I have no idea how much ink went into the cart. I just know that the
black ink line is almost all air while the others are almost all ink.
I tried starting over with the vacumn pump but that's pulling ink out
of the cart instead of air.
I know if I can fix it, just want to do it tonight instead of waiting
for MIS to send me a new black ink cart.
I'll probably just try the bottom fill adapter. All I can do is get
ink all over the place.
Thanks,

Bob,

In that case, take the feed line out of the cartridge. Then find a
way to seal that connector temporarily. Use the bottom feed adapter
and a 60 cc syringe to suck out most of the inks already in the
cartridge. You will have to do this many times, to extract as much
of the inks as possible, including any of the foam. Then make sure
you remove all of the breached tape seal from the exit port. Reseal
this port using electrical tape. It is very important that this tape
seals the exit port completely (otherwise you will not be able to
acheive vacuum). Re attach the feed tube, and follow the vacuum
filling process. If inks comes out into the feed lines, at this
stage you know that you did not remove all of the ink. You don't
happen to have metahnol around do you? Or 100% alcohol (don't waste
the 30 year single malt;-). If you have methanol, you might be able
to flush the cart, to help drive out more of the ink.

Good luck.

Shilesh:
Thanks again. Can't I accomplish the same thing by leaving the feed
line connected to the cart with the end of the feed line inserted down
into the CFS ink bottle, then just suck ink through the cart using the
bottom fill adapte? It seems that should fill the cart and line with
fresh ink and create some sort of vacumn inside the cart. I do have
some methanol but I'm afraid that will stay in the foam inside the
cart and dilute the ink. Or does that make a difference?

Bob,

I am afraid, once you have some ink and air in the cartridge, there
is really no way to refill, unless you first remove all of the
residual foam. Otherwise you will get crappy nozzle checks. I know
it sucks, but there is no point in rushing things. Re-prepping (or a
new cartridge) is the only way to go. If you suck from the bottom,
you are likely to suck the air into the cart, which will not help.
Give it a try - at most you will waste some ink/time.

Good luck.

Re: MIS CFS install help needed tonight (1/10/03 8:30 PM EST)

Well, I just put everything together the way it way. ran a few
cleaning cycles, got good nozzle checks, then printed about five purge
test patterns. There is a lot of air in the lines but it seems to be
printing OK. And, the ink is flowing through the tubes.

The problem may be there there is too much air and not enough ink in
the carts. Only time will tell. At least it's working now.

I'll just see how this works. If it doesn't I'll get new carts and
start over. This time I won't make the mistakes I did the first time.

Thanks for the help.

Re: MIS CFS install help needed tonight (1/10/03 8:30 PM EST)

Simply use the residual foam method. Keep drawing ink through the
bottom with a syringe. Eventually you will get solid ink everywhere.
Actually you need some air in the cart to act as an anti-siphon so the
ink won't all flow from the bottle into the printer.

You may have to draw a lot through. Keep emptying it back into the
bottle.

If it's working okay now fine. If you get nozzle skips in the future
then do this. No methanol.
