I am looking to replace the Densitometer at the school I teach at. We
mostly use it when we teach the Zone System. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks Steve

Transmission or reflective?

I purchased an Eseco Speedmaster Transmission densitometer off of ebay recently in mint condition for $150- Works great!!!

Densitometer

Does anyone know how I might find the correct "calibration standard"
for a Cosar 43 densitometer? Or can someone advise me of a way to
calibrate it?

Wilfred,

I am not familiar with that brand but if it is like other units you need a
specific standard from the manufacturer. I assume you cannot locate them or
they are out of business.

Without the factory calibration standards you can always correlate it to any
known standard. For instance you could measure a step wedge with a
densitometer that is calibrated and then read the same wedge using your
Cosar 43. From the two sets of readings you could then calculate correction
factors for the Cosar over the density range.

If you don't have access to another densitometer, you can purchase
calibrated reflective step wedges from Stouffer in the $15 to $40 range.

David, Helen,
thanks for taking the time to reply.
Helen,
I do appreciate your practical expanations and agree, that David's
"flexible" solution, is probably the way to go.
Look forward to the experience.
regards,
Peter

So the lowest cost solution for density only is still likely to be an ebay
densitometer, but the price for getting a more flexible solution is lower than
it used to be.

I agree with David Tobie's comments, but if you would like a
densitometer here's my rather dense two cents.

I was curious about what kind of densitometer or spectro I'd need to
make my own profiles or modify what I already have.
If I just want to use it for BW work, using a mono inkset then what do
I need to purchase?
I'm assuming I don't need one of the expensive ones.....

So what's a logical purchase?
I supppose I would like to know the price range as well. If it's
the 'best' and costs a lot, what benefit would I receive?
Conversely, if it's on the lower end of the price range, what
properties might I be giving up for the cheaper cost?

thanks
Scott

I have an X-Rite and ColorVision Print Fix Pro (PFP). The PFP may be the
cheapest one (new) that can do the job. I most often use the PFP. It does
not strip read, but for B&W, such is not needed. It only takes a minute to
read a 21-step test strip.

So is a densitometer all that is needed with my setup?
I see the PFP is over $500. I was hoping for less than $200. What
x-rite models are recommended?
Thanks

I have the Xrite at work and do alot of the haze and color checking, gloss meters....
Never thought of using it on the photo stuff...........

I do QA work for a Coating company,
we do canvas, dryerase, drafting films, dps, and inkjet matte films........

I'll investigate further..........

Thanks
