QUADTONE on EPSON 2100/2200?

QUADTONE on EPSON 2100/2200?

2003-02-13 by Jo Brunenberg

Hi folks,

I am using an Epson 2100.
Gives me great results for colour.
For B&W iti's great in terms of fine detail but not quite there in terms of metamerism / neutral greys.
Considering to buy 1280 for Piezography BW.

Or.... should I better wait untill Quadtone will be available for Epson 2100/2200?
Is there any development in that direction you know of?

Best regards,

Lyson will announce cartridges and a CIS for the 2100 in early march.
Piezography will announce support for new printers at PMA, but I don't
know yet if the 2100 is one of those printers.

Daniel Staver, who's a regular here, was passing some
rumors/information over on Photo.Net he had heard to the
effect that some products like that might be announced at
PMA. Keep in mind if you go quad/hex (sept?) on your 2100,
you'll have a hard time switching back to color.

You might be better off buying a dedicated 1280 for BW
if that's they route you want to go.

Also Epson has a new RIP for $200 that several people
are trying (with difficulty because it has no
documention) to evaluate, which might solve the BW
printing problem of the 2200.

PS - What's up with that? 2 people say they bought the
RIP and it had no documention. Since when do companies sell
$200 products with no documention? What is that, another
$200? Is that why IP is $500 (or whatever it is) - because
it has a manual? If tech-writing pays that well I'm switching
careers!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your response.
As for Lyson, I have made tests about a year ago. Liked their "rich blacks" .
Unfortunately their small gamut inks faded very fast when exposed to sunlight.
Piezography at that time was very stable when exposed to sunlight.
Hopefully Piezography will support 2100/2200 soon.

Best regards,

What is the concept of these "small gamut" inks? The description
says they are color inks designed for monochrome printing. My
understanding is that the use of some color allows for toning. Are
they dye or pigment based?

So when you say they faded, do you mean that they became lighter
across all colors, i.e., that a medium-gray became light gray, or do
you mean there was a color shift, e.g.., that the yellow component
faded out so the prints shifted to the blue?

Hi Peter,

- With this Lyson ink set you can achieve a limited range of "coloration" in your B&W images like sepia, cyanotype-like blue, greenish greys etc.
- I guess they are dye based (because they faded quite fast)
- Fading meant there was a dramatic drop in density as well as color shifts.
However I must admit I exposed them to "summer sunlight" during a few months, that's quite extreme.
But in simaltaneous test with a Piezography BW print this just showed a very minor change in the highights.
The BW silverprint (Agfa Record Rapid / Seliumtoned) did not show any change.

Jo Brunenberg
