Ed, have you tried these?

first do a couple normal cleanings. Then remove the cartridges, turn
them upside down and set them on the printer. Get a syringe, and mix a
solution of 1 part ammonia and 9 parts water. Squirt it through the
printhead nipples directly. You may not need to use a needle, depending
on the size ofour syringe. It may fit the nipple almost exactly. Squirt
about 20 or 30 cc's of solution through the black printhead. Be sure you
have a towel under the printhead to catch the crud.

Then, you can try this, which usually works on any clog. (in combination
with the above).

send the printheads to the far left of the printer and unplug the
printer. Soak a single paper towel in the ammonia water solution and
wring it out. Fold it over on itself many times, so you have about a 1
inch by 12 inch paper towel. Put this in the trough that the heads run
along. Push the paper down so it is in the channel, not sticking partway
out of it.
Pull the heads back and forth over the towel many times. Repeat with
another towel. Repeat with a third.
And maybe a fourth towel.

THis will clear all the gunk under the heads. Then do a couple more
normal cleanings with the printer software.
If none of this works, you may have a permanently dead printhead. These
2 methods have ALWAYS worked
for me though.

Have you checked that you don't have air in one of your inklines?

Jerry,
Thanks for all the good information. I'll try everything you
suggested. I have Windex with ammonia, but I guess I'll have to go to
the store and get some regular plain old ammonia so I can mix it as you
suggest. As far as air in the lines, no, I'm not sure I don't have it -
I don't know how to check for it. I never had a problem with any
previous Epson printer.

Thanks,
Ed

Well, my clog is gone, but I'm not sure why. I went to the grocery
store and they actually were kind enough to give me a syringe for free.
And I bought some ammonia. I mixed it, loaded it in the syringe, moved
the print heads over and removed the black cartridge, only to find that
I had no idea how to catch the fluid that would pour out the bottom of
the print head once I started squirting it in. I could not find a way
to take the bottom off the printer, and I could not find a way to get
anything under the print head without damaging or moving metal parts
that apparently should not be moved.

So I put the cartridge back in a figured I'd ask the list how to deal
with catching the fluid, and then I printed another test. Apparently
the Epson Gods was with me because this time it's OK. Printed a black
only photo and it's great again.

If anybody cares to explain, I'd love to understand the mystery of it
all..........

Thanks,
Ed

Ed, Windex with ammonia should work fine. Use The windex straight.

Jerry

Look for air bubbles in your ink lines.

Ed, Send the printheads far to the left, and put a folded over paper
towel (damp with ammonia and water) in the trough the heads slide along,
and then unplug the printer. Now drag the printheads to the middle of
the paper, and then squirt your syringe through the nipples. The crud
should drain out onto the towel. Repeat until clean.
