Jim, that is how I print on these papers - I spray them straight out of the
printer. The hard partis keeping dust etc off them whilst they dry!

RE: [Digital BW] Epson Glossy Photo paper, and spraying...

2003-02-27 by Jim Panzer

Julian,
You don't leave them hanging before you spray them, I was always
under the impression that glossy paper took a long time to dry, or can the
inks dry with the spray?

Jerry,
Hmm, interesting Jerry, I can see why some people think that, after
the spraying it does have a sort of plasticy look about it, but I figured
behind glass who would know.

Thanks guys!

the inks dry with the spray. There are many non-glossy photo papers that you
can use. If you want max dmax you are on a hiding to nothing with fineart
papers. Most of my stuff is sold framed - so I want the best 'behind-glass'
look I can get. For long tonal scale minimal black prints I use Wells River
or Photorag, for photos that are lo-key - I use the photo papers. As an
example http://www.foundobjectsgallery.com/FO/pages/card.htm this 'glows' on
Ilford 'Classic' pearl and is as flat as a pancake in comparison on
Photorag. I've got prints I made with Ilford Warmtone FB paper hanging
alongside these 'tacky' photo papers and they match a lot more than the fine
art papers do on certain images. basically if you are selling framed prints
you use the best paper for the image - if you are letting people handle the
papers, then the fineart papers are very impressive.

Dmax of MIS FS pigs on photo-type paper is over 2.0 - compare that with the
1.7 - ish of fineart papers. As to the spray - I use this

RE: [Digital BW] Epson Glossy Photo paper, and spraying...

2003-02-27 by Jim Panzer

I just use the Krylon number 1305 and 1303 sprays, they seems to work pretty
good. I am not sure about the d-max in that I have no way of measuring it
besides looking at it, and I don't see a great difference in before and
after with the VM inks.

the only reason for the spray is as a fixative - the dmax increase comes
through the use of the photo papers.
