Varnished print travelling portfolio

Varnished print travelling portfolio

2001-09-20 by Jerry Olson

Martin, I just got the Varnished prints, but there is no sheet in the
package to indicate where I should send it next.

I got the package from Mark Tucker. If a post with everybody's address
was sent, I must have either missed it, or not received it.

After looking at all the many different varnishes and papers, I must
say, I don't care much for the look. The blacks are a bit deeper, but
that quality is offset by the overall look of the paper, which just
doesn't seem "right". Some papers look better than others, but one in
particular, Museum Parchment/Royal Riviera/Torchon (Same paper) looks
particularly horrible. Just awful. The prints look like they were
printed on wrinkled saran wrap.

I love the blacks on uncoated Torchon, as they are about as deep as they
get. I sure wish there was less texture on that paper though.

I have made prints on Torchon, Epson Archival, Epson Watercolor, Legion
Photomatte and Eclipse, all which are extremely close to Torchon.

I am very glad to see these coatings, to see what they look like, and
want to thank you for all the work that must have been, but I personally
just don't care for the "look" of varnished watercolor papers.

A word of explanation on the prints Jerry mentions below. After all
the various coating trials I did, I wound up with a big stack of
coated prints. Some of them found their way to Todd and we started an
impromptu circulation of the package of prints among about 10 people.

My idea was to give people a chance to see what a vanished inkjet, in
this case Piezo, print looked like and get their opinions. The idea
was I would collect all the comments after everyone had seen them and
post one big message. We thought that we would get 10 uninfluenced
impressions this way. Unfortunately I forgot to enclose any kind of
instructions with the prints before they got to Jerry.

In any case, I am go to hold my comments for the moment and ask the
rest of the group do the same.

If anyone else would like to see them, let me know and I can add you
onto the end of the list. Each participant is responsible for the
cost of shipping to the next person on the list.

These are not fine prints. I did the coating trials on work prints
and the coatings are far from flawless. It is more an example of the
possibilities of different coatings and papers combinations and not
of what could be achieved in the quality area. I also included some
uncoated prints for reference.

Coated Eclipse Velvet is the show stopper...not sure whether Martin
experimented with that. I personally don't like the textured papers coated
either. In fact I don't really like any of the Hahnemule papers
coated...they are great uncoated though. If Cone profiles Museo it should
also be a great coated paper. Haven't seen the other smooth new papers yet.

Hi Robert...

Yes, Eclipse is fast becoming my favorite paper. It is certainly going
to replace torchon. It's amazing that torchon prints are as sharp as
they are with all that texture. But Eclipse. Wow! that is a nice paper!

Martin, Do you coated prints include an Eclipse one? If not you should add
one in...in my opinion the nicest coated paper. I'd really like to see a
MIS VM Eclipse print...coated and uncoated.

Photoinkjet.com Its also two sided with a different texture on both sides
adding to the usefulness.

Robert,

I did try some Eclipse Velvet and Satine. They are not with the
traveling group of prints at the moment although I will try to do an
intercept time permitting.

They both coated very nicely in terms of both ease and final result.
