printer recommendations

2001-09-21 by sfleck@franklincollege.edu

Hi,

In a former life I was a traditional darkroom B&W printer. A
couple of years ago I got an Epson 750 and then a 1200 and
eventually started trying to use Piezography. It has worked OK,
but I've always had banding issues with the 1200 despite
following all the suggested remedies.

I'm ready to try a new printer. I'd be printing 19x13s and I think I'd
like to use CIS. Any suggestions? Also I suppose that means
purchasing another version of Piezography software, right?

Thanks,

Susan

Susan,

I went the same route and was never able to eliminate some micro
banding or sub-micro banding. This was one of the reasons I decided
to give the MIS VM a try on a 1280, which has been fine in the
banding department with the Epson driver.

I installed the new Piezo software and it did not improve my banding
problems at all unfortunately.

I would suggest you go for a 1280 and with Piezo, which should be
released any day now. I plan to do the same if ConeTech will provide
an upgrade path from the 1200 to the 1280. It looks like Piezo for
the 1280 will include the software, CIS and inks for $950. I would
just as soon move all of the CIS off the 1200 except for the
cartridges, use the ink I already have and not have to pay so much.

It currently looks like the cost to go with a 1280 Piezo system
including the printer will be in the $1400 to $1500 range. Sigh. I
really wanted to go this way with the Selenium Piezo inks when they
come out but at that price it may be awhile.

Martin,

My understanding is that, if you have v6 of the Piezo software, the 1280
driver will be a free upgrade. So then you'll only need a CIS for the new
printer...??? + new inks if you want the Selenium inks in that. Or have I
got something really wrong?

Nij,

That is very good news! I really think that my banding problems with
Piezo are related to the particular 1200 I have and I want to move to
something better. The main issue for me has been the color of the
ink. So with a the selenium Piezo and a better printer I want to take
another try at Piezo.

This is correct (Jon just posted about it in Piezo3000)

$50 for the upgrade to 6 (if you don't have it already)
$125-$160 for the CIS (I don't know what the chipped version costs now)
+ the inks

Mike,

I was pleased to hear that ConeTech will not be charging for the
software end for those upgrading to the 1280 from an existing system.
That $950 price for the complete system (not including printer) was
looking pretty prohibitive.

One comment, if you are moving a CIS from a 1200 to a 1280 you can
just replace the cartridge portion for $45. Cleaning out the lines
doesn't look like much fun but the other parts look to be identical
and you will save a bunch. My CIS for the 1280 from NoMoreCarts ran
me $225.

Don't forget the chips! They don't come with the replacement carts
and I don't think David offers them seperately.

Terry,

Thanks for the tip. I assumed that they were included but I will ask
before I buy.
