Using 1290 Driver for 1280 & MIS VM

Using 1290 Driver for 1280 & MIS VM

2003-03-06 by Paul Roark

Is there a consensus as to whether the 1290 driver and VM curves work well
with the 1280 printer and MIS VM inkset?

I have always heard that the 1280 and 1290 are mechanically identical
(except that the 1280 uses the U.S. plug/voltage and the 1290 the European
standard).

In writing the curves, the 1290 printer and curves performed very well. So,
I've felt that driver and those curves might be further options that are
available to 1280 owners.

(I use the 7000 driver with my 7500. All it took was going to the Epson
download site and installing the driver. The driver installed, found the
appropriate printer, and didn't affect the existing driver. The Status
Monitor doesn't work, but that is not significant. I check the ink level
occasionally with the 7500 driver.)

If it's the same printer, then why even change the driver? Unless someone
else has already tried this and failed, tonight I'm going to try the 1290
curves and settings on my 1280. The driver settings are "No Color
Adjustment" for the 1290 curves, so I can't see why it shouldn't work.

I printed a set of images using the 1290 curves on the 1280. I, however,
only printed in neutral and neutral cold since that's I would use 99.9%
of the time. I then downloaded the 1290 driver and installed it and
printed the same images. I saw no difference at least with the neutral
and netural cold.

Re: [Digital BW] Using 1290 Driver for 1280 & MIS VM

2003-03-07 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

I found with SOME images, using the 1290 driver and 1290 curves gave a
bit smoother image than if I use the 1270 driver and curves.. Others had
found better results, again in some - not all - cases with the 1290
driver and curves than with the 1280 driver and curves. (My own tests
with the 1280 back then - currently I use it for Lyson inksets, but that
coud change to the MIS UC GP set - showed the 1290 driver seemed better
in some cases.)

So, I've got both drivers/printers installed.. If I find an image does
not work as well as I would like on the 1270 driver with my curves then
I can go to the 1290 driver in the print dialog and use those curves..
(I've also got a 1290 driver installed for the 1280)

That said: I find more difference, strangely (perhaps just my own
sensitivity to blue/cyan), in the way the two drvers print the VM sets
than the VM-S set...

I gave it a try last night: I used the 1290 curves, with the 1280 driver
(AdobeRGB, Same-as-source, No Color Adjustment). No joy.

For the VM-1290-C1 and VM-1290-NC1 curves, the output is not linear. The
step wedge is monotonically increasing, but not evenly. In the linear
gradient, there are some reversals and color shifts.

No dots, though!

The 870 that I wrote curves on was also up there with the best drivers in
terms of the output quality.

Any chance the 1270 driver and 870/1270 curves would work on the 1280?

The more options, the better.

DI don't mean to leave the 2000P people who ponied up the cash for one
disillusioned.. But, you can even use the 2000P driver on the 12x0
printers...

Is there a set of 2000P curves?

Actually, I hadn't thought of this before..

But, the 1290/1280/1270 drivers and curves should also work on a 2000P..

Why not use the 1290 driver AND the 1290 curves?

I've been using the 1270 curves and the 1270 driver on my 1280 with
great success. Much better than the 1280 curves/driver combination.
