Epson 2200 + QuadToneRIP

Epson 2200 + QuadToneRIP

2003-03-11 by Carl Schofield

I've been using Roy Harrington's QuadToneRIP
(http://www.harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html) with my Epson 2200 for the
past few days and I'm very impressed with both the quality of the
prints obtainable with this combo and the user friendly workflow that
the QuadToneRIP provides. I modified Roy's 2200 "starter" curve for
neutral B&W and came up with a draft curve that produces very nice B&W
prints on EAM and Eclipse Satine that are absolutely free of
metamerism. I would like to hear from and share information with other
Epson 2200/Mac users who are using or want to experiment with the
QuadTone RIP.

I'm going to install this and try it out tonight. Anything special I
should know re: installation or use? I ask because I'm not at all
familiar with Gimp Print, and want to make sure I put all the pieces
together correctly so I can properly evaluate the RIP. I'm running
OS 10.2.4 on a mac G4 w. an Epson 2200.

There was a problem with the installation package that Roy was going to
fix, but don't know if this has been done yet. He suggested a fix for
the installation problem in the following post and it worked for me.

You could check with Roy to see if this fix is still necessary for the
current installation package. He was also going to include my draft
neutral curve and workflow in the revised installation package, but I
don't know if this is ready yet. I'll email the curve and workflow to
you directly in the meantime.

Tell us more. Are you using the workflow described in the URL
you provided? I assume you're using the 2200-UCink. Are you
running this with GIMP or Photoshop or what?

The QuadToneRIP uses the latest versions of Gimp-Print and Ghostscript
which must be installed first. I do all of my printing through
Photoshop to the Gimp-Print/QuadToneRIP. The curves are edited in
Photoshop (CMYK psd files) and then saved as raw files with a .quad
extension for installation into the driver. Curve editing simply
involves adjusting the curves for C, M, and K levels, leaving Y set to
zero to eliminate metamerism, to get a neutral ramp in a 21 step
greyscale print. I modified Roy's workflow slightly for the 2200 and
use the following driver settings when printing greyscale images to
either EAM or Eclipse Satine using the Epson UC inks (matte black ink
installed):

Printer Features:
   Basic Settings:
    Media Type: Matte Paper
    Resolution: 1440x1440 Highest quality
    Image Type: Photograph
    Dither Algorithm: Adaptive Hybrid
    Ink Type: Seven Color Photo
   Expert Settings2:
Output Mode: Grayscale & Quadtone RIP
    Quadtone RIP Curves: 2200-neutral
Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma all set to 1
   Expert Settings3:
    Density: 0.9
    Saturation, C, M, and Y all set to 1

I've got a lot of irons in the fire right this second. I'll have
the new version later today. It's best to wait for it.

Roy: would it be possible for you to post a message here so we know
when the new version is available? I just downloaded it this
morning, but I'm happy to wait for the new version.

Thanks for your work, too.

I guess those of us who use a PC will have to stand on the sidelines!?

Make a dual boot machine of it. Best way is to get another HD and
put a Linux version on it. Or another PC. For driving a printer
you do not need the latest model either and some Linux
distributions occupy little space on the HD. Not to mention the
bootable CD Linux versions. That will make it difficult to add
the driver to but nothing stops Roy it seems.

Ernst, I'm just a guy that wanted to get a new larger printer and
run it from Mac OS X. All the off-the-shelf ways had limitations
and/or high cost. I found a flexible solution for free so I figured
on sharing it. The fact that it could work on Linux or that it
could help the 2200 where just bonuses.

Roy, it was a compliment, at least I thought it would be
considered a compliment.
It was not a request to do this job as well but more an
expression of admiration for the work done already.
