Ah yes...the lovely atlex site...not. Look under 13x19 papers...

http://www.atlex.com/Epson/paper/super_b_size.htm

Its at the end of the list. The price is the best that I've found without a
ridiculous shipping charge.

UC VM 4.3 is now MIS Ultra-Tone B&W

2003-03-11 by Paul Roark

MIS has a new page that talks about the new vm 4.3 ink. See

http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/ultratone.html

MIS needs beta testers for those who are interested.

Paul,

I'm wondering how much testing you've done using the new inks with the photo
black on gloss/semi-gloss papers. I know you've said that they work...but
I'm wondering how good the existing curves are for use on these types of
papers?

Apparently, my inks are on their way...and I will start with testing on
Epson Pro Glossy...which is currently my paper of choice with the
Ultrachromes/photo black for a silver print look. I'll use inkjet control
and the new quadtoneRIP option for OSX to try things out, but I'm wondering
how much work is in front of me to get from your EEM/Ebony Black curves to
something that will work with EPG/Photo Black.

Robert,

Just to clarify: Paul's curves don't work directly with
QuadToneRIP. His are RGB the QTR's are CMYK. They do
the same thing though. The curves in QTR were done on an
1160 with VM-Sepia but they ought (famous last words!) to
work with any VM compatible inkset. If you've got a 6 ink
printer more tweaking will probably be in order.

Robert,

The MIS webpage has spectrophotometer (X-Rite) readings of the 50% patch of
a neutral (generally "nc" curve) test strip for most of the papers I tested.
The papers included in the list are:

50% Patch (C,M,Y) "nc" curve --

EAM/EEM - .64, .65, .64
Epson UltraSmooth - .60, .61, .60
PhotoRag - .59, .61, .61
Epson Premium Luster - .58, .58, .58
Epson Photo Paper - .65, .66, .66
Ilford Smooth Gloss - .59, .59, .58
Museo - .55, .55, .55
Eclipse Satine Bright White ("mw" curve) - .56, .58, .56

(The MIS webpage for the Ultra-Tone B&W inkset is at:
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/ultratone.html

>I know you've said that they work...but
>I'm wondering how good the existing curves are for use on
>these types of papers?

Most of the 1160 curves I've used on most papers work surprisingly well.
The one exception is the "warm" curve. On at least some papers the shadow
ramp is not as linear as it should be. So, some of them could use some
tweaking. (Of course, I think everyone should know how to tweak the curves
and optimize their printing systems. The "canned" profile is just the
starting point for the fanatic.)

I might add that the RC papers can be less forgiving than the matte papers.

>Apparently, my inks are on their way...and I will start with testing on

I'd like to try some of that Epson Pro Glossy. Is it readily available?
How does it's price compare to the Ilford Smooth Pearl and Glossy? Those
papers have some nice characteristics.

When I saw Epson Photo Paper available at Costco for cheap, I had to include
that paper in the testing also. I hope this might be a quick and easy route
for many people. Also, some cheap, readily-available paper is needed for
drafts and volume prints like cards.

I don't know. I'll be interested in how that RIP works.

Sure, I understand. I'm more interested in running the various RIPs, but I
was just asking Paul to find out whether I would be able to easily test them
against the RGB partitioned workflow with the epson driver.

Atlex has it...but it is much more expensive than the Ilford...if you buy
the Ilford in quantity...that is now my standard proofing paper. The Epson
Pro Glossy is lighterweight than the Ilford, but has a surface much more
like a silver paper than anything else I've seen...it is also rated for
longevity, unlike the photo paper...which is even lighter still.

Actually I was referring to using your curves with the epson driver...from
what you've said above I take it that they worked relatively well.

Robert,

Do you have a product number and/or place at Atlex (or Epson) where they
describe the Epson Pro Glossy? I see a roll of "Photo Glossy Paper," #
SP91021, but I don't see the "Pro Glossy."

I hope that the existing vm curves will print on this paper like the other

Attention of Robert Morrison--

Robert,

Would you please let me know what Media setting you find works well with Epson's Professional Glossy. Also, have you made your own custom profiles for it, or are use using one of Epson's canned ones? If the latter or another, which one(s)?

Thanks

Peter Palmieri

Re: [Digital BW] UC VM 4.3 is now MIS Ultra-Tone B&W

Paul,
The Epson prod-id for Professional Glossy is S041456; it's 13x19, the only
size in sheets that's available. There are also 24" and 48" rolls (S041388 and 389)
which go under a different name "Glossy Paper (Photo Weight)" but are said to be
the same paper -- I've only used the sheets so far, so I can't vouch for the identity
of sheets and rolls. If you check the Epson site for these papers, you'll find them
under 'Graphic Arts' rather than 'Glossy Papers' or 'Photo Papers'.
All the naming confusion becomes a very endurable hassle after seeing how this
paper prints. I share Robert's enthusiasm for it.
