You'll get responses from people with a lot more experience than I have,
but: The only thing I've found that works so far is the 1280 with MIS VM
inks, in my case the VM-S. I don't think it is possible to make a true b&w
print with color inks, at least one that will remain the same b&w in various
lighting. The drawbacks: Working with a CIS is a royal PITA, undoing clogs
and the like. You pretty much have to print every day or so. You have to
like matte paper, such as Epson EEM. If you, like me, worked with air-dried
glossy fiber paper in the darkroom, insofar as I know there is nothing
similar available for inkjets. Or any glossy paper as far as that goes,
unless you're printing on a color printer such as the 2200.
I wouldn't worry too much about the cost - whatever you get will have a
short technology life. Having said all that, and having a really excellent
darkroom, there's no way I'm going back. It's not a matter of
onvenience - I can just make better prints on the desktop, all things
considered.
