I have a completely different suggestion. Why not go with Jon Cones new
system for Canon printers. The advantages are mainly around the fact that
it's very turn-key, uses industry standard ICC profiles rather than
complicated Piezo software, and best of all, the heads are interchangeable
so you can do color and black and white on one printer. Clogs are a non
issue because you can actually rinse the heads off under running water. The
results are superb and, in the near future, multiple toning options will be
available by utilizing the extra ink positions for toned inks.

I have recently (4 months ago) moved into the digital B&W darkroom and think
the results are superlative. I purchased a second 1280 to dedicate to B&W
and use the PiezotoneBW Inks (Selenium tone) with a CIS system on Photorag
308 paper - what a combination! Recent announcements from Jon Cone (owner
of Piezotone) will reduce the entry fee for this environment and he is
talking of introducing a hextone for the 1280.

Good Luck

Richard

I'm finally making the leap from wet to digital. I do mostly B&W 4X5
work with some 35mm. I just purchased Photoshop 7. Until I decide
on a scanner, I'm having a local service scan my negatives. My
hardest decision right now is what printer to get. I know a lot of
people use the 1280 with various quadtone inks. And following that
is a smattering of other printers and manufacturers.

I guess I'm looking for something that isn't on the way out. I've
looked at the 2200, but I've heard about some promising printers from
Canon for this type of work. So my question is this:

If you had $1000 or less to spend on a printer, and wanted to get the
best you could for B&W, what would you buy right now? Please also
take into account any rumors of future support by inkset providers.

Thanks!

Hi,
I could not find any reference to the new system. When will it be
available?

Clive,
ICC profiles for the 1280 had been anounced for April 6th. As far
as I know, this date has been cancelled (i.e. vanished from the
web site). No shedule for Canon ICCs has been published - as
far as I know.

Canon 900/9000 hex black bwICC system and EPSON quad black 1160
bwICC system to release prior to 1280 bwICC now. We are nearly there
(this month).

We are going to change the 1280 into a different ink positioning
system rather than the double C&M quad we used to run, so we postponed
that. It will give the user better ink economy by using equal amounts of the
inks in cartridges. The original system ran double full strength cyans and
magentas which is not a fuel efficient system when run from carts.

Also, by eliminating the double quad in the 1280 (bottles or carts) the result is
smoother output quality which is eliminating the slightly mechanical look it
had when running double full strength cyan and magenta inks.

Two good reasons for delay in our opinion.

best,

Jon Cone
