Slightly OT: Any Reason Not To Buy A Mac

2003-04-08 by cschaible94111

Hi all:

Please forgive me for asking this, but my existing PC is now filled
to overflowing with b&w photo files, and it's time to replace it. If
you like, feel free to respond off-list, but please tell me if there
is any reason why I should not replace that PC with a MAC. (My
reasons for wanting to do so include the huge virtual memory
available and the beautiful flat displays.) If it makes any
difference, I use a Nikon 4000 scanner, Photoshop, and print to a
1280 through the Piezo plug-in.

Thank you.

Chuck

No reason not to unless the cost of buying the Mac version of the software that you are using is prohibitive. In my view, the Mac OSX enviroment is preferable for photography because color management (ColorSync) is easy to handle, and all the hardware works in a standard environment. The other caveat is that you have to make sure that you are not running (specialized) software under Windows that is not available for the Mac.

Why do you need to replace your PC just because it's full if images? Can't
you just upgrade the hard drive or add a second (or third, or fourth) hard
drive? Or is there some other reason to upgrade? If there is no other
reason to upgrade or replace, it would be far cheaper to replace or add a
hard drive than to replace the entire PC.

Word is abuzz about new Macs being built not by Apple but a firm of mac
enthusiasts who are aiming for a faster machine, buy-your-own-monitor, ugly
duckling packaging, less than half the cost of a new Mac, and Apple appears
to be letting them do this. Read about it on the Allmacs list on Yahoo.
