1160 is dropped in the U.S. but is available in Europe. Ned, if you can
reach one I recommend it without hesitation. Reasons: 1) It is a 4 ink
printer 2) It uses non chipped carts. These two points mean less startup
cost; you have to purchase only 4 bottles of ink, also 4 bottled non
chip-resetter CIS' are cheaper and the 1160 also is cheapest A3+ Epson
printer around.

Loris.

Forgot to add: For around US$1000, you can configure 2 to 3 1160 with their
CIS' primed with different inksets (e.g. selenium + carbon sepia + pigment
color).

I went through this and decided on the 1280 over the 2200. Reasons, a)
price, b) no matter how much you work at it, getting rid of color shifts
will be difficult so I would find myself waiting until a quadtone
support for the 2200 and c) there is a lot of quadtone support for the 1280.

Some people complain about the speed - or lack thereof of the 1280. But
I will tell you it is a lot faster than the wet darkroom! I can wait a
few minutes to get a print our. No matter how fast it comes out of the
printer you can evaluate it for about 24 hours anyway till it completely
dires.

I got a 1280 about 6 months ago and am quite happy with it.

I was wondering, people always talking here about 1280, 1160,.. about
big (A3) format printers. What kind source of data you use if you can
print from 35mm negative to that size?

I am thinking about buying 890 small version of 1280(1290) Is there
any other reason than size to go for 1280?

Thanks!

A 4000dpi film scanner with good optics and electronics plus - if you
want to crop - an interpolation program such as Genuine Fractals. There
are some people who own a drum scanner (including the hybrid Imacons)
and others that are using drum scanning services... ect. ect.

Reese,

6 Megapixels are enough for a VERY sharp 12x18 print. The new Canon Top
of the line D1, selling for $8000 or
so is sharper and has more highlight detail than any film. (Possibly
excepting Tech Pan). Jeff Schew, a photo
shop guru and Alpha tester for Adobe got one and said he switched to
digital because of that camera. Said it
was better than film.

If you are shooting wide angle landscpes you probably would want the
11.1 megapixels of the Canon.

Jerry

Check out the professional reviews of the 11.1 megapixel canon.

An Epson 890 is how I decided to get into digital B&W. If you can
still find one (they're becoming pretty scarce) your cost after an
Epson rebate is $99.00. Add a set of MIS cartridges, refill kit and
inks and your total cost is just over $200.00. Seems pretty hard to
beat!!

Hey, I'd appreciate it if somebody could answer
Richard's question. When I had my darkroom, I never
printed anything bigger than 8x10. Since I believe
what people are saying about whatever we buy now being
outdated in a year or two or three, the 890 might be
good to have to fill in the time.

Thanks,

Reese

The 1280 is not the much more. While I am not a big fan of huge prints -
most places except museums are not meant for viewing huge prints.
 However a 11 by 14 is a very nice size. The 1280 will do a 11x14 but
the 890 won't.

And should you ever decide on a panorama, it will also print a 12x44
inch print.
