I'd get the 1280, MIS VM inks, A Nomorecarts CIS system,
Enhanced Black from media street for the black ink, and use Paul Roark's
curves.
This is the least expensive way to go with outstanding print quality.

Do I buy a Epson 1280, or a 2200 (and hope a more then duotone inkset comes out in the near future), a 3000 (seems out of the question due to banding problems) or a Canon S9000 (if thats the model supported, in hopes of being able to more easly deal with clogging)?

Start out with the Epson Enhanced matte paper. It's pretty inexpensive,
and makes very high quality prints. Here's a few more that make great
prints. The last 3 are hahnemuhle papers, very expensive, but great quality.

Epson Enhanced Matte. Get at http://www.atlex.com This is the
cheapest site on the web to get epson products.

Legion's Photo Matte
Epson Watercolor paper
Eclipse Bright White Satine (currently available at
http://www.inkjetgoodies.com This paper can be printed
on both sides. one is smooth, one slightly textured, brilliant white paper.
Somerset Enhanced

Royal Rennaisance
Royal Riviera
Royal Plush
