New B&W features for Qimage? Wish-List!

2003-04-18 by Steven Karafyllakis

Hi All;

I just got an email back from Mike Chaney, the author of Qimage; I
offered to out a wish-list of features together to make his app more
useful to B&W printers. He replied he'd be willing to seriously
consider any feature additions we might suggest, so I hope those of
you who are using Qimage will give it some thought and mail me any
suggestions you may have. I'll forward them on, & we'll see what
comes of it. I'd like to get the ball rolling by putting .psd file
compatiblity on the list for starters. I find it very annoying to
have to convert to .tif files, though when I want the best quality I
can get, I go to the trouble.

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions

How about ICC profiles through his Profile Prism for B&W printers?
The latest version 4.08 is the best yet for color and, amazingly,
it's scanner based. I wonder if he set his mind to B&W what he'd
come up with?

Hmmm... I'm confused, don't know Profile Prism at all. Its a color
profiling app right? You're suggesting he make that capable of
generating greyscale ICCs like the new Cone system, and then using
them in Qimage? Sounds interesting!

Yes, that's it exactly. I've used PP early on when it was finding
it's way. Mike Chaney would not give up and today it's a great
piece of work. I think there're real possibilities for a grayscale
version. Perhaps with the ability to tweak the results? I bet Mike
could do something every bit as good as the new Cone System and
probably at a very reasonable price too.

How does one create an ICC profile with Profile Prism for a film
scanner?

I've only used it to profile a printer. I believe it's capable of
profiling a scanner though. Here's the site:

Steve, you can add my vote for Qimage .psd compatibility. The
imcompatibility is a well kept secret until after the program is paid
for and a waste of effort learning the odd interface if it won't work
with psd files. Emails to qimage just blaim photoshop. I get image
read errors on a third of all images. There is no point advertising
superior image handling and enlargement, if it won't handle the image
in the first place.
I posted a question about this on the adobe photoshop forum and got a
reply from a user who said he had no problem with files saved
as .psd? So what is going on?

I use Qimage all the time with psd files. No issues. Photoshop
r7.01, qimage 2003.210. Never in 3 years have I had an issue with
qimage and photoshop.

I'm love for Mike to take on the B&W profiling issue with prism....

John;

almost all of my .psd files are layered; I haven't had a chance to
see if it will read flattened .psd files, have you checked that? I
get read error mesasages too..

Steve,
I tried many things but the results are so unpredictable there is no
solution in them. I flattened layers and sometimes it would read
sometimes not.
However, I have printed a couple of b&w straight from it and found it
worth pursuing, if it would just be more consistent. If it is
not .psd I don't know what it is. The person who had had no problems
with psd (who answered my PS forum question)also used XP on a PC so
the platform cannot be to blame either.
The fact that qimage doesn't specifically claim psd compatibility
suggests that it is the program,
John
