Epson 1200+Monochrome

2003-04-20 by bu88ahu88a

Hi, just found this forum...

I recently aquired an Epson 1200 printer, and have been researching quadtone/hextone options for it. I don't see many references to this printer here, and am wondering why? It seems like an ideal candidate: non-chipped, 6 inks. I have no experience with any of the monochrome systems, but have been using my 1270 for printing Photoshop duotone files for a while, and I'm ready to get into a dedicated printer.

At this point, I'm leaning toward the MIS VM inks, in a CFS setup. The IJC/OPM seems appealing, but it's not available for either of my printers.

Anyway, any experiences/advice/warnings about using the 1200?

Thanks,
BH

I started with a 720, and am now using a 1200 with VM inks using
self-filled carts. I've had some fussy clogs, but I'm generally quite
happy with it.

I use a 1200 with MIS inks and a CIS - works great. Only thing to look for is how hard the 1200 was used before you got it. Keep the printer clean and the metal rod inside slightly lubricated and your good to go.

of it.

Let me add that I have used a 1200 and the MIS-VM inks in their carts
since early October and have not yet had any problems.

That wasn't the question. He wanted to know how come the 1200 isn't
mentioned much. It's an old printer. Not
many people still have them.

Yes, I was just looking for any major warnings. Since it was free, I figure it will be a good way to get started with hextone & CFS, which can be (partially) moved to a new printer when necessary.

One downside to the printer seems to be the lack of paper settings in the driver (no Matte Heavyweight, Enhanced Matte, and so on). On that note, does anyone know, or know where to find, what the paper type selection actually does? I assume if "Color Controls" is selected under color management, that it determines which profile gets used by the driver. If "No Color Adjustment" is used, does the paper setting affect anything? Dot gain?

Thanks for all the replies!

Howdy

If you go to MIS web site there is a link to all the
instructions to print with VM. There is a pretty
specific workflow developed by Paul Roark that's real
easy as long as you follow step by step. It will
explain paper settings, color control settings and all
that. I would try a set of prefilled cartridges before
comitting to a CIS system. That way you can waste a
bunch of ink messing around and getting the hang if
things. Get some Epson Enhanced Matte to start with
and then experiment with some other papers. I have
found with most papers use the same paper settings for
EEM. Some tweeks here and there perhaps, but the basic
Raork flow works pretty well across a range of paper.
Experiment and have fun, I know I am with my 1200.

Right On

I have found Pauls workflow to be very good with my 1200. When
changing to Bright Cube Satine paper which I like very much, I used
Jerry Olsens suggestion "adj. layer-levels-middle slider minus 15
units" prints perfect almost exactly like EHM, EEM
