Epson 3000 Printer ?

Epson 3000 Printer ?

2003-05-08 by B. Alex Pettit Jr.

I am totally befuddled as to whether this printer is a good
'investment' or not: I have read numerous posts that GoodOnes are
great performers and reliable, but that the BadOnes have miserable
print banding and all attempts at repair will not heal their
ailments..... ???

Whats the story ??

(I have an excellent 2000P that works quite well for 8x10 and 12x16
prints, I would be using the 3000 only for 16x20 format)

Anyone have a GoodOne for sale ?

Thanks,
Alex

It seems I'm always chasing Jerry around on the internet undoing the
damage he does to the 3000's good name. I like to promote this
printer, but only for traditional quad work and only within it's
limitations. A lot has been learned about what can and can't be done
with it since Jerry's short experience with it years ago.
I have two, both work fine. Steve Meyers has one that works fine. It
seems others come out of the woodwork when asked that are happy with
theirs as well. Use a traditional quad ink set, a good partitioning
workflow like the Piezo driver or the upcoming Cone profiles or
special RGB curves you may be able to find somewhere on this list. For
some reason IJC has chosen not to support the all time classic Epson
for quad printing, and the one that will do 16x20's at a reasonable
cost. Go figure.
A variable tone set will work to, but will be more dotty. I haven't
seen the results myself but it's a simple technical conclusion. I
don't know how noticeable the difference is, might be fine.
Stick with papers under 250gsm. Always double check alignment and
nozzles. One acquaintance never got his to work, I'm not sure of the
details.
You'd be better off asking on the Piezo list, more users there I think.

Me me me... I'm not really in the woodwork, just wayyyy toooo busy to
participate as I'd like to, but I am very very very happy with my two 3000s.
They misfeed every now and then (take multiple sheets instead of one, but
that's the paper, not the printer), they clog, but when working correctly
(as in after a few head cleanings), the output is simply amazing. I use the
Cone Piezo Classic ;-), and really am very very very happy. I also use one
for color work, printing out schematics, AutoCAD files etc., and it works
great.

Regards,

Austin

The 3000 works very well with the MIS VM-S inkset. This inkset goes from a
non-warming neutral to full sepia. I consider it to be essentially dotless
at normal viewing distances, especially for 16x20 prints. I have curves
that work very well with my PC outfit, but I do not know how they work with
Mac. So, if you have Photoshop and a PC, the 3000 and MIS VM-S inkset is a
very economical way to make excellent 16x20 prints. (Now that I have a 7500
with, the 3000 mostly sits idle, however.)

I have worked with an Epson 3000 printer for about two years now with no
major clogging or problems. The printer is slooooow but is a real work
horse, I am using Cone Tech selenimun inks with beautiful results.

Jerry, Tyler, Austin, Paul and Thomas,

Thanks for the replies. Your generally most positive replies have
given me the encouragement needed to commit to purchasing one. I have
been offered ( a promised GoodOne ) at a most reasonable price, so I
guess I will have an opportunity to try some larger format printing
quite soon !

Best to All,
Alex

Say a prayer to the epson gods austin. Not all of us have had your luck.
Did they upgrade the printer since it was released? Thick paper go
through it without banding, and without one side of the image being
shorter than the other? Of course you are using the original piezo inks,
that were way too brown for me. That I know has changed now.

All I was doing is to tell the buyer he MAY get a bad printer, and to
prepare for it.

Jerry
