SilverFast Ai 6 question

SilverFast Ai 6 question

2003-05-12 by davidspielman2003

Hello All,

I thought someone on this list may know the answer to this question...

I have SilverFast Ai 6 that came bundled with my Epson 3200 Pro
scanner, and it works fine with it. I also have a Nikon CoolScan LS-
2000 scanner that I would also like to use with SF Ai 6, but I don't
seem to be smart enough to get the SF Ai 6 software to see the Nikon
scanner. Do I have to do something special to get the program to see
both scanners?

Thanks.

Yes, buy it again for the 2nd scanner :-(

I may be wrong and someone else could correct me, but I think that
each scanner has it's "own" Silverfast to drive it. Also check their
website - there is tech support and a user forum
http://www.silverfast.com/

They do also have SF HDR which is a standalone application that'll
read 16 bit RAW files scanned on any scanner or from any digital
camera. But that's not exactly what you're asking for.

Silverfast is specific to a particular scanner (make and, in some cases,
model). If you bought Silverfast (or, as in your case, if the software
was bundled)for a specific scanner it will not work with any other
scanner.

I have been using Silverfast since version 5.5 (also 6) and I finally
gave it up for Vuescan. I personally think that Vuescan does a much
better job at batch scanning, auto-exposures and has a pretty
complete database of film types and emulsions. I also think the user
interface is much more intuitive.

Regards,
Duncan

Interestingly, I don't remember any ILFORD B&W negative film profile
(other than the chromogenic XP2) present in Vuescan... [Sarcasm mode on]
Perhaps that's because ILFORD films like HP5+, FP4+, Delta 100, 400 and
3200 are seldomly used films in the B&W realm [Sarcasm mode off]

Loris.

Do you feel that there is a reason HP5+ and FP4+ are "seldomly used
in the B&W realm?" I use both regularly. What don't I know??
(Sarcasm mode definately off!)

That was my point exactly - for instance, I use them "exclusively". I
was calling attention to the fact that Vuescan DOES NOT INCLUDE profiles
for films like HP5+, FP4+ and Delta series which all are used ABUNDANTLY
by B&W photographers. This is in contrary to Duncan's "...a pretty
complete database of film types and emulsions..." statement about
Vuescan.

Loris.

My comments were many directed at SFAI6 incomplete database (mainly
color films) and clunky user interface. Also SFAI6 is lousy at auto
exposure and auto white balance feature.

Oh BTW it doesn't take very much effort to create profiles for your
favorite films not currently in the DB. (SC on...).......

Neither are Tri-X, Plus-X, High Speed Infrared. So it's not just Ilford
that is discriminated against. I asked Ed about High Speed Infrared once
and he said that the T-Max 100 profile would probably do fine. And indeed
it did. It also seems to work well for Tri-X, etc. I've even used it for
Polapan 55 P/N negatives with great results. This suggests to me that there
is not as much variability between black and white films as there is
between color films. I can imagine that, especially for color negative
films, the film base could vary quite a bit between different films (orange
mask, etc.)
