Goodbye Jerry

Goodbye Jerry

2003-05-17 by tomoc

To say I was shocked when I logged onto the Digital BW Print
Exchanges group this morning is an understatement. I've been
travelling the last week and a number of this months exchange
particpants have emailed me with problems and qustions about posting
their prints...my replies generally referr to the "Jerry Olson"
syndrome...he gave up on posting...just couldn't make it work...many
months ago and began emailing me small jpgs so I could post for him.
All I can say is that is was a great treat to have some reason to
email him on a nearly daily basis and speak by phone from time to
time. I just shipped his last set of exchange prints before I left
and wondered why I hadn't heard from him yet...he always chimed in
with compliments for the good printers and help for the newbies who
needed and wanted it.

what a great guy...

what a great photographer.

I could go on but to tell the truth I am somewhat overwhelmed at the
moment. When I get home Sunday night, I will set up a separate folder
in the PHOTO section of the Digital BW Print Exchanges group to
include all of Jerry's prints (he never missed a month of the monthly
exchange...even the month when the Post Office took 3 months to
deliver to me, he got a second set to me in a timely fashion...what a
dedicated guy).

Keith posted a notice about a foundation being set up...count me in
and I have some other ideas for things we can do to raise the money
to be sure his work survives (I'd be willing to bet he is the only
graduate of Brooks Institutue who went back to practice in ND <g>).

Jerry, we'll miss you, buddy...you'll never have a clog again and
your blacks will always be black (and you won't need the piggly
wiggly to ship to us any more).

Jerry's prints are scattered all over the place right now.

I enjoyed Jerry's posts too, and had a few short off list discussions
with him. I'll miss reading more from him.

I hope someone takes good care of his cats.

I never met Jerry but like many others on this list I was really hit
hard by the news of his death. For several years now I've enjoyed
reading his wonderfully informative, and often humorous, emails and I
felt a certain kinship with him because I too generally prefer
cool-tone prints :-)

I feel honored to have some of his marvelous photographs through the
various exchanges we've both been a part of and his contributions to
this list (and others) will be sorely missed. Ciao Jerry.

Well said, better than I can express.

Jerry was the guy that first clued me into Eclipse paper, which I've
used for all purposes for quite awhile- ironic, isn't it that the
paper is going away too...

We ask for longevity from our media, when reality itself offers us
instances of inconstantsy all around us.
