Ilford/1280/Ultratones/IJC

Ilford/1280/Ultratones/IJC

2003-06-02 by Robert Morrison

I've been experimenting with the Ultratone ink set with a 1280 being driven
by Ink Jet Control (IJC). My aim to get the best performance on RC (Ilford
Gallerie Smooth Pearl) papers...to prepare for release of the Oriental
Fiber-Based paper.

I'll try to make this short. The 1280 is the wrong machine for the job. It
simply does not put out enough ink compared to the 2200. I've tested both
the MIS Ultratone photo black ink and also the Epson Archival black and they
simply don't get near the dmax that you can get from a 2200 with the
Ultrachrome Photo Black. The differences are startling. The highest dmax I
was able to get from the 1280 was 2.0, while I was able to easily get 2.25
with the 2200. Antonis has managed to get 2.4 from his 2200 with IJC. I
don't think the problem is the ink...the problem is the printer. This makes
me wonder if we could get much better matte black performance with a 2200 as
well.

Thus, when MIS is able to get the 2200 carts/chips I think the ultimate RC
printing machine will be a 2200 loaded with a mixture of MIS Ultratones and
the Epson Ultrachromes...driven by inkjet control. There are many possible
loadings for such a machine...but I have no doubt it will be an incredible
BW printer.
