2100(2200) The illusive cold B/W print!

2100(2200) The illusive cold B/W print!

2003-06-11 by martinshakeshaft

In the days when I didn't know better I bought a Epsom 2100 thinking
that I would be able to get a neutral B/W print out of the box....OK
I was stupid!

After experimenting with various setting/paper combinations I got a
print that I was quite please with in daylight, but in other lighting
conditions (mainly flouresant) I got metamism - magenta cast. I was
using Matte Black Ink and Epson Archival Matte Paper.

At work we have a Epson 950 and I tried a black only print at
2880dpi. It was fairly neutral and quite pleasing. Unfortunately
when I try it on the 2100 I get a very warm print, similar to Agfa
Record Rapid (for those people with wet darkroom experience). Nice
enough if you like that kind of thing, but I am after neutral!

This got me thinking......Probably the simplest way I am going to be
able to use the printer for B/W and colour is to print B/W's with
black ink only if I can find a neutral black. Does anyone have any
thoughts on this, suggestions?

Plan B is to invest in the Epson Pro Rip which I understand can print
B/W's using both the Black and Light black inks. Could anyone give
me any feedback on this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Martin

Don't spend your money on any RIPs, at least to solve this problem.
(Epson should be ashamed of themselves for charging for a RIP
that actually allows - with considerable pain, as I understand it -
the printer to do something they claim it does right out of the
box). If you want the Epson RIP, please pirate it :-)

I hate to be a cheerleader, but the (free) answer to your problems
is at: www.bowhaus.com/inkjetcontrol. Search this forum for OPM
and IJC for more details.

Unfortunately I am Windows based!

What's plan C?

Its imageprint (www.colorbytesoftware.com) and it costs $495, but you will
need to check to make sure that they support the 2100. I regularly run BW
commercial work using Imageprint with my 2200. It isn't as flexible as IJC,
and shadows tend to be compressed, but it is available for Windows. My
understanding is that there is development on going for a windows version of
IJC, but I don't know what the time table is.

For less than that, you can get a cheap used Mac G3 as a print
server. Whether you consider having another computer an
advantage or disadvantage might sway your decision.

P.S. There was a lot of discussion of this option awhile back -
details about how to share files between the two machines, etc.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
