You don't mention the size of the film you are scanning.

So are intending to do proof sheets on this scanner and then have the
keepers drum scanned? Because if you are used to drum scanning anything out
of a desktop scanner will just make you mad. Better to save your money for
an Imacon...or look into a lease.

Allyen,

Or buy your own used drum scanner!<G> I tried scanning 4x5 on a Linoscan
1400 flatbed and wound up with a used Howtek D4000. Not a path for the faint
of heart and it cost me ~$5,000. Prices may be even lower at the moment and
it can pay for itself rather quickly if you are having scans done by someone
else. You may even get better results doing your own scans.

If you go the flatbed route give the 3200 a try. It is very reasonable.

Martin:

I recently bought an almost unused Howtek 6500 (will scan up to 16x20!)
through a former Howtek sales manager. If anyone is interested, he knows of
several other 4500 and 7500's for sale, he says in excellent condition (and
he certainly steered me right!). Contact me off-list if you are interested.

Re: [Digital BW] Flatbed Scanners?

2003-06-12 by Julian Thomas

I'm about to start a project shooting 10x8 and output has been specified as
being 'up to' 50x40. I need to shoot neg for a whole load of boring reasons.
having done tests and asked around people who use both drums and flatbeds,
for negs, oil mounted flatbed is the way to go - but a good flatbed. I use a
1680pro and the optics aren't good enough for what i want. Don't just count
pixels, but stuff like variable focussing and razor sharp optics count. I've
just had a scan done on a creo and an imacon of a 160 asa colour neg. The
imacon is the worse scan IMO. Another advantage of the oil mounted flatbed
is that you can use a mounting station and mount a whole batch up. Also
cheaper than the imacon. I was lucky to be able to take advice from a number
of folk who have and use drums, imacon's and flatbed. And whilst chromes are
best drum scanned - not everything is. However I'm shooting colour so you
may find BW works differently.

Re: [Digital BW] Flatbed Scanners?

2003-06-12 by Allyen Wilson

Looks like a nice scanner, if you know where I can get one for 98% off of
the $22,495 sticker price, let me know. :-)

I looked at this but it doesn't have a removable platen. With scanners such
as the creo and aztec flatbed you can have a number of platens, oil mount
the negs on a mounting station, and have in effect, one on the machine, one
being mounted and one being cleaned

If you are used to the quality of a drum scan, I doubt that a desktop
scanner will satisfy you. If you can't afford to buy a drum scanner, you
might be happier with a dedicated film scanner. In another post I saw that
you scan up to 4x5. Polaroid has a 4x5 film scanner that will also scan
35mm and medium format. It's rather more expensive than your $1500,
however. I have an older model Polaroid 45 scanner which gives me up to
2000 ppi resolution and a Polaroid SS4000 35mm film scanner which gives up
to 4000 ppi. The combined cost of these items was about what you want can
pay. I got the SS4000 with a hefty rebate from Polaroid (they were
discontinuing it and releasing a new model) and the 45 on eBay. I use it
for 4x5 and 6x9 and reserve the SS4000 for 35mm.
