Printer Gamma 1.8 and 2.2???

Printer Gamma 1.8 and 2.2???

2003-07-06 by Johnny Eades

I have reread the instructions on MIS website posted by Paul Roark
about using MIS inks with his workflow and curves for output to an
Epson 1280. I have been using printer Gamma 2.2 chosen from the
print menues concerning color controls. Upon rereading the
instructions I noticed his mentioning using printer Gamms 1.8. I
then tried that setting and have found the upper values are rather
washed out and have no detail.Shen printing the same print with the
printer Gamma 2.2 settings the higher values have detail and body as
do the shadows. If 2.2 is wrong then what is happening with the 1.8
setting??

Johnny: read Clayton Jones article on Black Only printing at
http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn4.htm (part 4). It's the best
explanation of Gamma 1.8 and 2.2 and the various interactions that
I've ever read. Even though you're printing with hextones in your 1280
and his articles are about BO, the information you're looking for is
there.

Thanks for the plug for the articles. I think it's important to
mention that with other printing techniques the significance of the
front end gamma setting may be quite different than with BO. My
statements were based on my observations with that technique. Using
partitioning curves is a very different animal and the BO gamma
concepts may not apply. I don't know for certain since I don't use
those other methods, but anyway, it would be good to keep this in
mind.

Regards,
Clayton
